Really? If there are no red flag laws to address these situations, how would you restrict people like that from possessing firearms?
The people you described would be charged with assault, reckless endangerment and a host of other things. Orders of protection and rules of due process would have any firearms kept in safekeeping.
Federal law prohibits convicted felons, domestic violence perpetrators, mental health inmates, or those with restraining orders against them from having a gun. However, few mass shooters, and others fall into any of these categories. They aren't convicted felons, they may express violent tendencies but commit no crime or domestic abuse, can not have an enforceable restraining order issued against them, and are not committed to a mental institution.
I'm all for repeal of the second amendment and taking away their guns. Here in Indiana they have concealed carry and they have groups of motorcycle riders, and diesel pickup drivers who often intimidate innocent people in traffic with their guns. I see no need to strap a gun on your waist when you are off to work at some factory or warehouse.
People like that are scared of associating with their fellow citizens. They seem to have an inferiority and persecution complex and see violence as the only way to assert their manhood.
The United States should restructure its gun laws to be more like Canada, where both rifles and pistols are strictly controlled. I have had the chance to speak with Canadian men who told me they had a 303 certificate which covered one's permission to own and use a hunting rifle. I also had a chance to speak with a hunting guide who had an American made Marlin rifle. I don't exactly remember the Canadian requirements concerning the amount of extra bullets one could own. And their hand gun laws were much more restricted, and even prohibited. I would like to see similar laws in America, including restrictions on big military weapons, like the 50 BMG which in fact is an anti tank gun. The Fifty can pierce armor and in an accidental discharge could go through several houses or cars. It is dangerous and should be outlawed in America. Big capacity guns like the AR-15 or the AK-47 Russian battle rifles should not be allowed in public hands at all. I noticed the white supremacist marchers in Virginia were carrying these weapons in public. That show was to warn the other citizens. To make OUR country safe, I 'd very much like a serious gun confiscation, starting with these military guns and high capacity others.
NYC which has a far larger population than Toronto had 660 shooting incidences from Jan. 2018 - oct. 2018. 3.8% Toronto in this same time period 2018 had 604 shootings incidences. don’t think for a minute that Canada’s strict gun laws prevents anything. Plenty of guns to be had and killings happen.
Colorado just passed a RED FLAG LAW which commanded police agencies to confiscate guns from Red Flag individuals, such as men who threaten and beat their wives, or threaten to go postal on their co-workers, or employers. At this time I cannot say for sure that Colorado's new law covers the scenario where an individual or a group of individuals join or form an organization which calls for the forming of a separate nation which excludes non-white persons. There have been many such white separatist organizations, like the Aryan Nations, The Order, and the newly formed Alt-Right and White Nationalists. Their method of pushing political agenda is to tell the recruits that they support gun ownership under America's Second Amendment, while all along they want to use their guns to form a new All White Nation. I think the police should increase the level of scrutiny when it come to these dangerous white nationalists.
I am afraid of firearms. Legal/ registered arms and illegal arms are two very different things and these conversations need to acknowledge that. an illegal firearm is a crime waiting to happen.
Lots of the people/groups in the protest have been saying things like "see, we can get a bunch of people with guns together without there being a massacre," which just seems like a really low bar to set.
I see what you are saying. It makes sense. I also see that while there was no mass shooting, the presence of that many guns did serve to intimidate others who hold a different political opinion and did serve to warn government officials. Some of the pro-gun banners did say they would fight to keep their guns. One large banner was a picture of a 50 BMG which is an anti-tank armor piercing monstrosity.
