How rude are you going to be?

For example, the other day it was your birthday and I wrote, "Happy birthday man" or something to that effect in the message box.

Would it have been okay of me to write, "Happy birthday you old douchebag," or is that too rude?

I got a rather bizarre neg rep the other day, which kind of borders on filthy.... but just stupid.
