The Hindu spiritual master, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (founder of the 'Art of Living' foundation) has created a technique called the 'Eternity Process' , a meditation technique through which one is able to remember the memories of one's past lives stored in the subconscious mind. Many of my friends and others have gone through this technique , and in the process , have realised the memories of their previous births.

The Indian religions believe in the theory of karma or 'cause and effect'. This theory finds ample expression in the fact that those who have gone through the 'Eternity Process ' found that their inborn ,innate talents can be traced back to training in a previous birth.

This technique is getting increasingly popular, and according to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar , it is now being practiced in a few psychiatric clinics as well.

In order to do this technique , one ought to contact the nearest 'Art of Living ' centre and get in touch with an 'Art of Living ' teacher trained in this technique. One ought to be 21 years of age to do this technique.

All my friends , who have done this technique, found it to be very interesting and illuminating. I wish you the same.

Thanks for the info. I have always felt like I have been here before. Recently, I started exploring this more. I'll be sure to see if there's a centre any where near.

It's possible that past life memories can be explained in other ways than the standard model of re-incarnation.

It could be that in a collective un-conscious, ALL human memories are stored, and that's what's being tapped into in such experiences.
Possibly, it may even be in some way encoded in the cellular memory, in the genetic code itself.

Also, imagination is a powerful force............

I'm not saying that re-incarnation is correct or not - just pointing out that it is only one way in which experiences of this nature can be understood or interpreted. Within a Hindu or a Buddhist context, it is natural to explain it as re-incarnation memory, because that is the cultural norm. Some might say cultural baggage.
Either way, it's not quite so clear cut as some would have us believe.

Many yogis say that to pursue knowledge of previous lives is nothing more than a distraction from the true path.

    discovering past lives is fun

first i discovered i was alexander the great
    then i became julius ceaser
then someone i care not to mention... a bit embarrassing i was that person
another person i choose to keep secret
then i was richard the lion hearted... now i'm feeling pround again
    then i was george washington
    then i was chief seattle
another one i care not to mention... very embarrassing
    and now i'm just me

for the most part i'm happy with my incarnations but yes, there have been a few rough spots

It is waste of time. Why dwell on the past when the infinite vistas of bliss can be found in the present?

it's been highlighted also that most ppl cant deal with the miseries in this life, let alone add to them by remembering miseries in supposed past lives.

haha, that just hits the nail on the head. The fact is we really are struggling and suffering in this life, why remember your attachments, losses, and problems of your innumerable previous lives? for what?

Hey Chief, I was Julius Caesar, dammit.

A careful review of all aspects of the present life can at least provide clues to the past ones, no mystic techniques involved.

Beautiful! The present is all we have at any given time, memories are good and bad and make for nice references, but since they are not real, dwelling on them is pointless, they are not eternal :)

while i think its rather silly to dwell on them, it is a rather quick and fascinating read of the akashic record and as in my case, hanuman the supreme personality of godhead, asked me to read it and so who was i to say no

Sure, I love my memories too, I think memories are actually important, because theu make us strong and our past experience can teach us how to better ourselves. But, yes I also find it silly to dwell on them, especially the memories that bring us pain. There is no reason to relive that kind of pain, we should be focusing on how to please god and therefor, ourselves :)

Well said Bhakti. It is important to learn from our past experiences to keep our lives in the perspectives of what we have experienced before, etc., but at the same time silly to dwell in the past. The painful past is over, and the happy past is never coming back, so clinging to it is silly

Yea, plus, god doesnt directly make disators happen, I mean yea he does make them happen, but I dont think that is a direct result of OUR behaviour, unless you are speaking of the god in the Old Testament or something.

Actually we already know our past I think, our past is controlled by Sriman Narayana, the present is being controlled by Narayana and the future too is in control of Sriman narayana alone. Our past , our present, our future is Sriman Narayana.

We get disasters of biblical proportions because we also reap what we sow.

Oh yes it is, it is the product of our behavior , however such behavior is too controlled by Narayana.
