I'm sorry, but I hate how this word has so many negative connotations... Ladies, its time we claimed it and made it beautiful.

A word of love, not a tool of hate and oppression.

    I'm with you, Retrogroovegrrl.

The word doesn't offend me at all.

I just worry about offending others when I use it :)

    Absolutely!

It's origins actually date back to Sumeria... cuneiform (their form of writing) derives from kunta, meaning female genitalia. Kunta is woman in some Near Eastern and African languages. Also can be spelled quna, which became the root for the word queen. Female priests were usually the accountants and administrators in temples, such as Inanna's temple - chances are that cuneiform mean sing of the kunta, those who kept books.

so really... **** means queen who invented writing and numerals. Hurrah!

I HATE this word. I don't know if it is "reclaimable" JMO. I just wonder how seriously a womyn will be taken as a female advocate if she casually uses words like this, which have been used for decades, as a way to violate and degrade womyn.

I don't see the point. If you do, go ahead and carry on. :) Maybe it's worth a try, but I aint't using it.

I totally understand the want, or even the need to take the sting out of this word. It has just accumulated such bad, I don't know, karma, that I don't know if "reclaiming" it would be workable.

    Good luck. :D

Hey Maggie Sugar, I'm with you. I hate that word too. It just sounds so vulgar and degrading towards womyn. It's like a slap in the face or something. ;)

    Peace.

Yep, but I do respect other womyn's want to use it, if they choose. :)

LOL, I don't mind calling my genetalia my **** I guess, but I don't believe we should go around calling each other cunts...or bitches for that matter. Although the black community reclaimed the N word, and if that word can be reclaimed I think **** could.

I think we should use it to remove the negative connotation, along with the words chubby and slut.

If a guy can be husky and still be considered ok, a girl can be chubby and be hawt.

If a guy can sleep around and be a player, a girl can sleep around and be a slut....but it can be a good thing! We just have to stop saying, "Oh, that offends me," make a big deal about it, or run off crying. We should say, "Yea, I have a ****/I am a slut/I am chubby and I'm no better or worse than that husky man/player/man with a dick."

It's only offensive because we allow it to be. If we just stop thinking of it that way and explain why it's ok, the guys won't try to use it as ammo in fights. It's simple.

    I'm not offended. :)
That was actually funny. But it has a double standard, if a dude posted that, I think I'd be offended. LOL. See?

LMAO! Too funny. That didn't offend me either. Just as Maggie said, if you had been a man calling us that, well, then that's a different matter. ;)

I don't object to womyn who choose to use that word. It's men using it in a crude fashion that really push my buttons. *lol*

    Peace.

I don't know...the whole "if a man said it, I'd be offended" thing pisses me off. So if a woman came up to you and said "shut up, ****" you'd be alright with that, 'cause it's a woman who said it? Such a double standard.

Personally, I don't give a fuck about the word. It's a word. It carries the meaning you give it. I hate all this analyzing and shit about words and what will offend certain people and not others. It's so annoying.

I just wonder...does it offend you (meaning anyone here) the same if someone said to a man "You're such a dick?" It's the same thing as calling a woman a ****, isn't it? What're your thoughts on that?

Life's too short/complicated for crap like double standards/being PC.
Is it really necessary to compound things?

Wow, you're totally blowing things way out of context! Calm down sweetie! What I meant by my post was that if a woman chose to call her delicates that, or, as in naturegoddess said in a lighthearted manner "I'm a ****, you're a ****, etc.", it doesn't bother me. I do, howver, think that it's an insult to call someone that, as in "shut up ****" as you referred, regardless of sex.

    Talk about overanalyzing! Cool down!

Actualy I don't think that you are a ****. I think you have a ****. If you want to use the word, that's fine, but you are much more than your genitalia.

[edit] Or does posting this make me a prick?

I don't have an issue with an individual group reclaiming and using a word for artistic or social causes. We can have ****; AA's and BA's can have the infamous "N-word" and as a bisexual wommon I feel pretty entitled to dyke and faggot. Outside of an artistic realm, this really is a pretty bad thing regardless of the origin. Hell, "fond" used to mean idiotic and we're not ascribing to that definition because you can't return to old definitions. It isn't the way language works. I respect the right to use it and can see the benefit, but it's not a man's word, ever.

Meaning: Men don't have or deserve ownership over this word because they haven't always used it correctly in the past.
