I am a newly born vegan. However I have always gotten sick on foods cooked at certain temperatures so one of my vegan friends suggessted I become a Raw food vegetarian. What is it? Is it healthy? Better? Thanks and Peace.

    NAMASTE

I have been on a raw food diet for a year now.I went to it for less fuel and energy to prepare my meal.Better for mother nature.By not cooking your food and eating it raw you are eating the best way for yourself and the planet. After seeing a few friends who went raw i was sold on how great it is for you. Here is some site to check out. There is a raw food group too in your area there that would be great on helping you with how to eat the best way on a raw diet.

I've heard from several vegans that raw food diets are mainly to cleanse your system, because it's so hard to maintain. They felt really good afterwards, so go for it.

Hey! Doesn't it feel good to take control of what goes in your body and decide for yourself how you're going to feel?

Another good website is www.blackvegetarians.com. It's obviously a website for black vegetarians, so it's got a ton of good soul food recipes for when you get tired of the lettuce-and-bread-and-Indian food routine. But I suggested it because on the recipes section, there is a little picture next to each raw/live food recipe to signify that no cooking is required.

    Hope that helps!

i came over here planning to start a thread inquiring about raw food, and here it is, already waiting for me.

i've been curious about raw food for awhile. my life will be changing drastically soon, and i'll have more freedom to choose how and what i eat. i'm thinking about setting a goal for 50% raw - i still have a fondness for long-simmered soups and baked goods. (eccofarmer: don't crock pots use relatively little energy?)

my concern about going raw has to do with its cleansing effect on the body. i probably really need to detox, but i'm a nursing mother. any toxins that will be eliminated by other ways will also come out in my breast milk, and that's not good for my daughter. should i not consider going raw until she's weaned, and then go for a detox diet for awhile? i'm hoping to let her self-wean, so it could be a year before she stops, although i don't plan on letting her nurse beyond 3. what about very gradually going raw, will that have the same effect?
