Is anyone familiar with this website? http://rateyourmusic.com I feel this is an excellent resource for music aficionados like myself, and it has really opened me up to a lot of music I would have otherwise never been exposed to over the years. My favorite aspect of this website is the custom charts, where you can view albums according to their rating (high or low), year, genre, etc. (or all of those things combined). http://rateyourmusic.com/customchart
I know the site but apparently have no use for it since I never look it up. I still use last.fm for opening up for new music, not for the reviews but for matching in taste, similar genres and similar artists etc. Much more useful to me than reviews or sites like pandora. Of course having an extensive library of the stuff you listen helps with how good the generated recommendations are. But then again, we are often into really different kinds of music so perhaps that site works better.
Here you go, Asmo. The highest ranked dub albums. Agree/disagree? http://rateyourmusic.com/customchar...=both&origin_countries=&limit=none&countries=
50/50. Lots of albums that ought to be on there (like the nr. 1) are there but I just come from my own subjective preferences and I have never digged the nr. 2 on that list. I can't even see why others find it so great. I do rank Scientist among the best but for different albums. And so forth with the rest Dub is a really repetitive genre though so if a certain style is boring to you it gets REALLY boring. If I would listen to the top 10 as an interested noob I'd probably be put off to explore further. This could also happen with the recommended similar artists on last.fm though
I don't really use either of those listening type sites. I am more the type of person who researches different genres, albums and bands, then goes to search for the album online to download and listen to in full. Often times I don't even preview individual songs first. I like to go right into a full-length album I have never heard before, not knowing what to expect. Sometimes it sucks, while other times I am pleasantly surprised. I have discovered a lot of cool music this way.
ive discover most of my music through last.fm and youtube. mostly listen to metal, but i do like alot of other genres. just not country and rap.
Most country and most rap does suck but then you find little gems in these genres. Well I have. =] Anything mainstream related to these aren't my thing, you gotta go alternative and underground.
There is good music from pretty much every genre, except maybe nu-metal and shit like that. I guess it really boils down to personal taste, but I have found that when people say they hate hip-hop music, it's because they're only familiar with the shit that has been promoted by the media and pop culture.
i had to look up my favorite band on there (built to spill) that lead me to a thread about Pavement, someone asking for similar bands. i would say built to spill is, as a couple people have... but one of them said that built to spill among several other bands were "basically big-budget Pavement homages with extra neuroses and a smaller vocabulary" i want to bitch slap him. built to spill is way fucking better than pavement for one. i like both bands, but built to spill - way better. they are hardly "big budget" they do cite pavement as a musical influence, but calling them a pavement-homage band is not accurate. more neuroses?! here's a quote about Malkmus, the lead singer of pavement pavement broke up because he didn't want to do it anymore. built to spill is still touring. i hadnt heard of this site before, rat. i'll check it out some more.
