Today, on the ride home from work, I overheard two older african americans talking about the youth of their ethnic group. And one of them, an older man looked about 75, said that both rap music and basketball were two of the worst things to happen to black people. The advent of those two things apparently, in his mind, made it possible for people to get away with being rude, obnoxious, and unintelligent. He likened most of the black youth he saw to rap-star wannabe burn-outs that would only do well at making illegitimate children and police reports. I have nothing to add....but I thought maybe everyone else might have something to say....hmm....ponderous...
I'm sure many of us could come up with examples of the people who led this man to feel that way. On the other hand, there are also plenty of people of all races who are rude, obnoxious and unintelligent who have no connection to either rap or basketball.
a friend of mine got me to listen to kobe bryant rap... good god, it was so bad, much much worse than even allen iverson's "raps" haha, shaq's rapped before too...
Hip Hop is among the most creative genres of music being made right now. It literally subtle and brilliant. And basketballs an incredible sport. I think the reason most people have such an aversion to hip hop is the fear of succesful black people. Society is afraid of wealthy black people, because they break through the roof held over black people for so long. I mean of course there are a few spoiled black athelets, and rappers, but for the most part it's had a very positive impact on black culture in America. You even have crackers like me lovin' hip hop.
you can say the same for many white baseball players and country artists (Jason Giambi, Toby Keith). i agree with what you said about the fear thing.
] So thats WHY. I've always thought it had to do with all the talk about bustin a cap in someones ass and slapping some bitches around. Cause, obviously whites dont care if blacks kill each other and treat their women like shit.
Basketball as a sport? Dude, it was invented by a Canadian. I personally find it boring. Run to one end 2 points run to the other end, 2 points. All you REALLY need to do is watch the last six seconds. Interesting - one week when I was doing electrical work on the bike and therefore was bussing to work there was some African American kid being a total jerk. It was all some older dude could do to literally stop himself from walking down to the back of the bus and SMACKING the stupid out of the kid.
Hmm maybe its just me but I thought it was pretty clear that he said it because it was invented by a Canadian and he personally finds it boring, so do I but that doesn't make me a rabid racist. Also the lack of instruments and music makes me not like rap, but once again I dont hate black people just because some of them make tunes I dont like.
compared to basketball, baseball moves slower than growing grass... i dont see anybody complaining about that sport. and youve obviously never given non-mainstream rap a chance if you cant find any with instruments.
Yeah, violence is only a black phenomenon. Maybe if you listened to hip hop, you wouldn't have such a shallow view of it. And black culture.
RE: Are you sure you're not saying that just because the majority of the players in the NBA are black? WTF? How did you draw that conclusion? I don't give a shit what color they are. It's a boring game. Baseball even more so, that doesn't mean I hate the Japanese and Latinos. RE: what the hell is that supposed to mean? B-ball was invented by a Canuck. Look it up.
I put your first anti-basketball statement together with what you have to say about rap music... everything becomes quite clear then.
Oh, I see. Because I think rap music is basically boring, repetitive misogynist, anti-woman and anti-gay garbage, and I find basketball boring, I'm racist? Basketball was invented by a white Canadian. If I think it's boring then I'm really clowning on some dude from Aylmer, Quebec. As for rap artists, I've never said rap=black, that was someone else. Rappers include whites, Latinos, all sorts of folks. Including homosexual men, like Eminem.
Uh? Stop playing the race card to try and make an argument. Dont sit here and tell us that the rap thats been HUGE the past 20 years hasnt been extremely violent. Have the likes of NWA, Ice T, 2pac, biggie, Snoop, cypress hill, Wu Tang, Eminem, 50 cent made a shitload of money by not using violent and/or misogynistic references? Let me be fair, there has been Will Smith. I quite like rap, but lets not pretend it is something other than what it really is. And god, rap is black culture? Dont tell bill cosby that, he'll choke on his jello.
RE: i suppose it isn't all that different than say....wannabe bikers Well, there's lots of those. The Discovery channel is full of em. Bikerdom involves everyone - from squids in neon-green leather (to match the Katana) to out-and-out I-don't-own-a-home-I-simply-ride-the-Harley Easyriders types. Can't stereotype there.
You're the one who implied that violent culture was black culture. If thats not what you mean you should prhase your responces better. Will Smith was a terrible rapper. Art emitates life, and yes, if someone has a violent life like 50, that'll probably be violent lyrics. Wu Tang is the best hip hop group ever. Cosby's an elitist prick. He knows as much about black culture as Ron Howard.
The real issue is the over glorifying of stereotypes.Any culture has it's stereotypes, regardless of it being positive or negative. But the sad thing is,is that all stereotypes either being crude to absolute ridiculous, have atleast some truth to them. It's incredibley sad,yet hypocritical.People will outright dismiss them in public, yet on the other hand support them(It's our flaws,we can laugh,or tolerate them.) Our problem is that we allow these stereotypes to breed, and then complain that they're spreading like wildfire. And sadly, yes there are overzealous, materialism, chaunvistic, violent, greedy African Americans who generate a near impossible if not risky image for the young generation of their community to look up to.It's a harsh reality that there are alot of uneducated, poor, working class African Americans and Latinos who sometimes either end up unemployed,or in jail. However, there is also proof that there are hard working African Americans and Latinos who strive to live a life that's well dosen't feed to either their culture's stereotypes. To quote Chris Rock;"I love Black People.Love 'em..LLLOOVVEE them.BUT!I just can't fuckin' stand Niggers. That's right.NIGGERS." But then again, there's culture and traditions to be proud of,and then there's momments when people flaunt their identities with a pompus, arrogant attitude that also tends to grind people's nerves.... Not to sound racisit, but if I do,then well, get over it,it's an internet forum, you'll survive....Stupidity has various shades of color and walks of life. It's fluent in many tounges, and could probably live right down the street from you. It's everywhere, and it knows no shame. Well,if you excuse me,I'm gonna smoke
