I have always hated doctors. Always. Ever since I was young and they found every excuse for my sudden shift in height and weight without even doing a blood panel or anything. As far as I'm concerned, the only good doctor is a research physician. They're just more thorough and exploratory. They ask the "why" instead of just treating symptoms.

Anyway, to recent events: We have a mold issue in our basement (we live in the basement). It flooded twice, and we spotted mold on the interior walls. Called the landlady and she just wanted to put a space heater on the walls to dry the mold up. No mold tests, no anything.

Well, one of our roommates came down with a bad sounding respiratory thing. Then Brian got it. And then I did. I'm used to congestion and everything. I suffered frequent colds back in Missouri. Was always having sinus problems and hacking stuff up. But this feels different. It's a dry congestion, won't cough up. It hurts to breathe.

So I called my GP, a doc assigned to me by a medical insurance that I was assigned to. I make an appointment. He gets me in that more (within 40 minutes of the call) and I'm more than willing to give this guy the benefit of the doubt.

So I get there, fill out paperwork like a good girl, and then I go back to an exam room. He proceeds to take my blood pressure (but not tell me what it is), listens to my lungs (but not my heart), and then prescribed me robitussin (without asking any questions or anything). I ask if robitussin is safe in pregnancy, he doesn't know. He asks if I have any other concerns. I tell him AGAIN about the mold and the others in the house having respiratory problems recently. He says, "It's just inflamation of the lungs". And I think to myself, okay, my lungs are inflamed. WHY ARE THEY INFLAMED? Normal lungs don't do that! I then tell him that I think I have an ear infection, so he checks my ears. Sure enough, I have an ear infection. He prescribes ammoxicillin. I'm sitting 5 feet from his desk and even I can see clearly that my chart says "ALLERGIES: PENICILLIN". So I ask him. He decides to prescribe a Z-pack. I ask if it's safe in pregnancy. He doesn't know. He checks on both of the prescriptions he made, they are safe for pregnancy. He sends me on my way.

Note: I have congestion and an ear infection. Usually doctors are supposed to check your glands (on your throat), your nose, etc. He did NONE OF THOSE THINGS. I said something about the mold issue. And I've dealt with mold issues before. They're supposed to ask about rashes you might have, as well as other things. He asked me no questions. He prescribed a blanket antibiotic and sent me on my way. I'm so pissed off. Anyway, just thought I would rant.

Any suggestions? I don't know if I can change GPs or anything.

it sounds like you really really need a new doctor. I'd look into what's required to change up doctors, if you need to file an official complain or something

You get what you pay for. If you don't pay for it, you get what you're given.

I realise that, but the incompetency of this physician astounded me.

I've been on assigned medical care before, and never once have I dealt with THIS level of complete disregard.

Yep, I'd definitely file a complaint.

"Gee, I don't know if this will hurt your baby, but here take this!"

Pshhhh, give me a break. That guy is a crock.

When you have medical insurance you ARE paying for it.

Even if she wasn't, even poor people deseve decent medical care.

Freek, can you get an other doctor. Just him missing the Pen allergy would be a tip off that this dude is not doing his job.

I hope you are feeling better.

I'm not saying she doesn't deserve decent care.

I'm saying that's what public stuff is - shoddy, uninterested and half-assed.
It sucks, but what can you do?

I mean, right now my wife is on meds we can barely afford. We kinda could if we moved back to Canada, but it isn't available there cause of price caps.

Okay, so I called the nurseline attached to the medical insurance.

She said to call my doctor, see if an appointment can be made with any other doctor at the practice other than the one I'm not liking, if not call urgent care.

So he's the only one in the office. I called urgentcare and they said I had to have a physician referral in order to be seen. So now I'm supposed to call up this doctor, tell him I will not be seen by him, and hope he gives me a referral? I don't want to be rude, and in all honesty, I don't feel well enough right now to deal with anymore talking or negotiating, let alone telling a guy that I don't feel safe in his practice. :(

I called him anyway. I was very honest with him and he seemed to understand. As much as I tried to apologise for saying anything so harsh, he kept reassuring me that the fault was all his own. He referred me to urgentcare.

The doctor there basically said that I'm suffering a severe form of the common cold, probably due to the pregnancy, stress in my life, and the fact that I'm new to this environment. She prescribed rest, lots of water, more rest, and a cough syrup that will put me to sleep more than likely.

Now, my next thing will be calling the insurance company to have my PHP changed to someone that doesn't scare me quite so much.

ive been suffering with migranes on almost a weekly basis. when i first saw my doctor about it he literally talked to me for five minutes. i told him about the migranes and he said OK and that he would prescribe me somthing for them and got up and left the room before i could say another word! he gave me imitrex. well that hasnt been working and ive still been getting migranes and just this last month alone had to go to the emergency room four times which is $150 every time i go (with insurance) and i cant afford it anymore but my migranes are SO severe that i felt i had to go. ( i do finally have an appt with a specialist next month) so i call my doc up this last weekend when i felt a migrane coming on and asked him to prescribe me some pain meds knowing that i was going to have this migrane all weekend and just cannot afford the ER....besides the docs there are now telling me to stop coming to the ER and start dealing with this thru my family physican. my doc (thru his nurse) tells me that he will NOT give me any pain meds and that all he can do is advise to me go to the ER again. !!!!!!! i was so pissed and im trying to find another doctor....i really want to shove my foot in his ass.

About a year ago, I came down with the UTI from hell with NO warning. I just woke up one evening with the worst one I've ever had. It landed me in the ER. I had just moved into town, and had to look for a doctor immediately for the follow-up. This chick looked like she was just out of med school. She asked if I felt better, I said that the ER drugs were doing their jobs, and she looked at me blankly and asked why I was there, then. We talked for a couple minutes, and she decided that I was severly depressed and she wanted me on prescripton medication before I hurt myself or someone else. I'm not sure how one can go into a doctor with a UTI and come out clinically depressed. Weird.

I told her that yes, I know I'm depressive. I have been like this since adolescence hit. I'm twenty now (at the time). I have collected knives for two years during this. If I were going to do something violent, I'd have done it already! It didn't help.

That was the last time I've ever been to a doctor. I don't like them. Almost as bad as dentists. EEeeeeeeewwww. . .
