I've been working on a very old door that goes on the closet in my second floor hallway. It's taken me a while and I'm kind of tired of working on it. Stripped layers of paint with a heat gun and hand-sanded what was left (including all the little grooves that border each "pane" of wood). The pieces had kind of separated over the years so I glued them and clamped them all tight again. That's how it sits tonight. Finally!! I bet I have 10-12 hours into this so far but I'll be ready to paint it tomorrow. I also have the original (I assume) hinges which I haven't stripped yet but those should be cool once all of the paint is removed.

On a different note, my daughter is bummed because she can't go to the football game tonight. She didn't turn in an assignment on Tuesday and my wife told her that if she missed another one this week, she wouldn't be doing anything this weekend. She actually got a little snappy with me trying to make the case that this isn't fair. I got a little stern with her and said "She told you what would happen on Tuesday. You, of all people, should know that she means what she says! So, that's it! This is over!"

Usually, when I have to be like that....it's is indeed over. That changed her attitude really fast. Geez, did you think you got different parents overnight or something?

Too many parents out there who aren't paying enough attention and don't follow through on what they say. Then they wonder why they have brats who are out of control.

That's completely true. But I think paying attention and giving kids a stable environment where they know what to expect is a big step in the right direction. I was initially going to say "kids who are out of control and do shitty in school" but there are many reasons why kids don't do well in school and some of them have little to do with parenting directly.

And really....our daughter doesn't have a bad life at all and we aren't super strict parents. I rarely have to be stern with her. But she knows that when we say something, we mean what we say and that doesn't just go for disciplinary types of things. It's just as important to show her character by fulfilling your commitments, promises, etc or not making them to begin with. It goes both ways.

You know what's bullshit though? Sending kids home with 9 assignments over the weekend!! She's been working on homework for 3 fucking hours on a Friday night (with me periodically helping her) in the hopes of getting 1/3 of her homework for the weekend done tonight. What kind of shit is this? We never had this kind of shit when I was a kid and I went to a magnet school and had a nearly perfect GPA in college.

This is the kind of thing that convinces me that either the teachers aren't teaching very well (probably unlikely) or the system under which they are teaching is needlessly burdensome (probably very likely). I'd love to discuss this issue with the school board but I think I would shred them in any debate and I don't think it would change a thing because I get the impression that they are obligated, regardless of logic. I say this while my wife works for the district.

That's ridiculous to require a kid to do on the weekend.

Is she in the talented and gifted class?

She is a grade ahead but otherwise her classes are normal for her grade level. But she has quite a list of accomplishments for her age. She's always on the honor roll, she's on the student council, she's a "student mentor"....I could go on. She's a good kid. She does well in school and she has plenty of other activities like dance, etc.

But...school is becoming a place where you learn to take tests. You have to go home to learn empathy and giving a fuck about people.

That icing makes my teeth hurt just looking at it...

The knee is... Not the way it's supposed to be.

I've had the brace off since I got home from visiting my Father today but I really have to watch out putting any weight on it. (with or without the brace) If it's in the right position I can stand on it but it hurts bad... If it's in the wrong position I'll go down in a clump on the floor in a split second.

No simple knee brace either... Dual hinged version with knee cap support. It should do more than just remind me to not bend my knee...

Oh, and getting in and out of the car is a trip... Glad it's not a standard, I wouldn't be able to drive a clutch right now.

That's the name of the game, is it not? That's why teaching your kids things at home is important.
