Howdy Ya'll! I was wondering if anybody had any information on music events which coincided with gatherings? I have heard that occasionally some type of dance event pops up off site from a gathering, say a mile or so away in the forest. I was wondering what the family here thinks of this? I have only been to a few gatherings, two national and two regional, and have not really heard this topic disscussed. I understand the need to keep electricity out of a gathering, surely the boombox battles of concert lots have demonstrated why there would be a problem. Also I can see how amplified music may hurt the rainbow reputation, shifting from prayer towards party. Personally however, I feel that I would love to organize some type of event like this. For instance, I have a great urge to share the talents of myself and my band with all of the family, and simply can not manage this acoutically. Im sure many other bands, DJ's, Lighting artists, and Film makers must feel the same way. So say for example a band and some dj's put on a show a mile out from the gathering, or however far enough away that the sound did'nt reach the gathering, and there was some type of friendly power source, and word was spread through the gathering about the music event. What other aspects would cause concern amongst family? and what angles may I have completley overlooked.... help me out on this
I heard of a rave at Montana 2000 that was supposed to be deep deep in the back yonder, but it was just heresay so dont know if there any truth to it.... to not have anyone jump all over ya your going to have to further away than a mile.... Unless you can do it with drums and dijis ha ha Mike... Mike...
It's interesting that you asked this because I have many contacts to get a gas-powered generator, but I thought that since we are living off the land that we should keep these types of things away from rainbow. A lot of my friends who never been to a rainbow gathering suggested this and when I said that the one of the points of rainbow is to live off the land and try to leave as little impact on the land as possible. Then they called me a hippie that is afraid of technology..LOL I was thinking that if someone could design a solar powered generator, then I would say yes to this. It would be amazing to hear some phatty drum and bass beats at nationals!
There was a mini-rave at/near a-camp at the 98 Arizona national on the night July 3. Wasn't very big, mainly a van/bus with lights and sound system. Didn't seem to be disturbing anybody but also was far from main circle, maybe 1/2 mile away. The sound system wasn't overly loud either.
I have yet to go to my first gathering, but when I do this summer I hope that I can at least play some good tunes from my vehicle.....as long as they are GOOD TUNES and not anything hateful. In that environment it seems to me I would provoke smiles if I was jammin to some Marley, or something like that. Am I wrong in assuming this? Please tell me now before I piss people off by my Jammin habbits.
Every mini manual you find at www.welcomehome.org has these words in some form or another... Its all about respect folks.... Technology We welcome experiments in non-polluting and low energy technology. Hand tools and alternative energy devices - such as solar or wind - are appropriate to a Gathering. Electric generators, chain saws, and gasoline powered tools are not. Bicycles and horses may enter a Gathering. Motorcycles and automobiles (other than emergency and supply) may not.
I wonder if there was a way to get a hold of the resources to build a solar powered generator...not just for this purpose, but for other things throughout the gathering. I know a brother who could build something like this, but lacks the resources.
wouldn't this be a great return to Bablylon move? A music party in a close by area for everyone having to head back somewhere & to thank the locals for their kindness? much better than my sweetie's ritual greaseburger! he says it's grounding.
solar powerd generator is very unlikley unless you got solar panels across acres of land (yes exagerated a bit), Lots of setups use solar paneles to charge battery banks (were talking watts here) which then power their doo dads once charged. Now I'm no expert on this stuff but do visit www.otherpower.com once in awhile...
Ive seen a house before that was completely ran from solar power. All modern technology too.....computer, dish/clothes washer, microwave, oven, etc. etc. All ran from the panels on their roof. The guy was a doctor I believe......quite expensive.
exactly but it was running off a battery bank which the solar power charged (or else how do you have power at night).. that is very cool though.... I love reading about things like that...
That would be A-camp. If you are a drinker, don't look anything like a cop, and can handle your own if a brawl starts then you MIGHT be able to camp near your car. Don't worry though, you will have fun without using power (gas / car battery).
Lotsa folk do gotta have their tunes. Many just hang by their vehicle @ parking and jam out. Then when they need peace....they have the gathering. I blared Marley @ WV in the car. Ocala had a kid who blared Johnny Cash for 1½ weeks straight one year. The few radios I see inside a gathering/camps are always low, at a distance and not bothering. The 2-way radios bother me more. Raves...... Yup. One of the best was outside the 99 Pennsylvania Gathering and was awesome. You could spot us the next day in the gathering.....Glittered, Blue/green painted faces and hand/finger prints adourned us. We knew, but hardly anyone knew a Rave went on in the next valley. Ocala rocks and a great event you FEEL once on the Main Trail. PR
i'm glad i came upon this thread. i'm not a raver but, the issue of electricity applies heavily to me as i am a street performer who uses a battery powered amp for my guitar. my first gathering was last summer in VT and i didn't have my guitar b/c it was in Utah with me mum. so, people let me play their guitars whenever i wanted. but still, even though i LOVE playing acoustic, i AM a rocker and NEED my electric with me at the Gathering in Ocala. is anyone going to be offended that i'm using a battery powered amp to jam out? i'm not a heavy guitarist, although i CAN be. i just enjoy playing the usual damn-dirty-hippy stuff, dead, beatles, phish, cash, willie. i hope i won't offend anyone by playing electric around main circle after dinner and during drums. Gypsy Joe "Mr. Pitch"
i think pignose type amps have tended to be a little more accepted than boomboxes, etc at the gatherings(many) i've been to. As long as it is kept at low volume so it doesn't carry to other camps from where you're playing it's not likely to be a problem. My view is that with those at least it is an individual in the woods making the music and not somebody in a studio across the world somewhere. i have all year to listen to Marley and other "hippie" type bands, only a limited Time to hear family playin their own music in the woods.
wow.. lots of discussion since I posted this. Im enjoying hearing everyone's thoughts, Ocala is most likely not going to be a possibiliity for the band, but I should be there drummin same as last year.
