Anyways, first off, there is no "direct" link between any mental illness (including schizophrenia) and violence. Here's an interesting link you may like: http://promoteacceptance.samhsa.gov/publications/facts.aspx?printid=1 On the other hand, when you close down all the mental hospitals, then, yes, you are looking for trouble. Because in that instance, even the severely ill (who often only need brief hospitalizations anyways) are out on the streets too. But then again, there is something weird I've noticed. And I think I will share it with all of you. Consider Michigan. About 20 years ago, this jerk of a man, that dared call himself our governor, John Engler (Republican), closed down, well, basically all of the mental hospitals. (The closing of Lafayette Clinic was especially hard, because it was world-renowned for its research.) Anyways, most mentally ill people in Michigan are out on the streets now. There sadly can be no denying that. Yet how often do you hear of a school (or workplace, etc.) shooting in Michigan, that involves the mentally ill? I'm up on the news. And so far, in the past 20 years, I've heard of none, that involved mentally ill people in any event. What are we to make of this strange set of circumstances? BTW, I am also open to the idea a news story might have just passed me by. So feel free to post links to them. But back to my original point: What makes Michigan different? And am I just falling prey to the very prejudice I try to fight when I say this?
About the same time they were all closed in Ohio... Of course we are all crazy, so it didn't change anything.
Mental hospitals were closed. Assisted living facilities were opened.. There are many Mentally ill people that dont even care there are assisted living facilities .. They would rather live with family: who in turn takes their SSI money.. progress.
Violence is a manifestation of mental illness. It stems from lack of control over self, uncontrolled anger issues. If that is not dis-ease, then what is? Most people are completely ignorant when it comes to mental illness. Which is probably why so many hospitals closed. Many say there is no such thing. But then how do you account for the actions of those who cannot live in the world with the rest of us, who have problems that get in the way of day to day life? You brain is just another body part, and it can malfunction just like any other. But it is less understood because it's more complicated. People act "strange" and so they are shunned or feared. No one wants to understand, they just want to get away. I feel that nearly all violent offenders in prison are actually mentally ill and should be treated as such rather than be tormented and tortured in a prison setting. There should be a lot less prisons and a lot more lock down mental hospital facilities.
