they aren't white-colored, but then neither are any other white people except for albinos, with few exceptions. no matter how pale you are, rarely are there actual WHITE people. its just a relatively meaningless term for caucasians. mediterranean isn't an ethnic group any more than white is. they're still distinct from each other. but they are caucasian, nonetheless, and still, in most people's minds, "white." but then, like i said, there is no standard definition of whiteness anyway. its just a word with little meaning behind it, and not it's own racial or ethnic group.
very true. i never got the point anyway. i'd just considered "white" thepeachy northern european sorts, and the rest sort of fell into different groups. most people i know are mixed anyway.
my geneological background is almost entirely scottish and german, yet almost nobody i know can even pinpoint a larger overall racial group to place me in. i certainly don't look like a northwestern european, even if i can convince people i'm white. name a vague ethnic term, and i've probably been associated with it or people have thought i was partially that. people have told me i look french, mediterranean, middle eastern, spanish, native american, asian, mostly white with slim black heritage, etc. etc. i recently met a black chick who asked me what i was. i asked for clarification on the question, and she said "what color are you?" i replied "well, sort of a tan or olive color." she said "nonono, what race?" i said i was white, and she looked at her brother and said "his parents lied to him!!" jokingly. also had people of other ethnicities jokingly call me a sand ******. i dont know why it is, but i've got tan skin, dark, wavy hair, almond shaped eyes, and a peculiarly shaped facial bone structure for what should, if ethnicity had much to do with it, a run of the mill, all purpose whiteboy. changing my hair style, facial hair, and clothing can allow me to change what people interpret me as, generally speaking. for instance, with long hair i'm much more often assumed to be native, but with really short hair like i have now i'm more often thought of as mediterranean or middle eastern. odd. race is a funny thing. gives me an idea for a new post...
That is, of course, exactly what I was trying to say. One should never make hasty posts. I sit corrected and will strive to make improvements. (Grin)
wha? no one knows peckerwood? a common reference by pre-civil right movement blacks (and during ) as woodpeckers have red tops and the mangling kept the local rednecks from getting the insult.
