Apparently a hate crime, but not one based on race. "National origin", presuming non-US origin, is the most obvious basis in this case, from the information presented.

Claiming something with no apparent connection to race is racist undermines the claim, not that a violent attack occurred, but that the motivation was racist. It weakens public outrage over actual racist attacks.

Hispanic/Latino isn't a racial designation in the US (nor is talking about how one crossed the border, that he or she may have overstayed a visa, or that he or she is evading the execution of a deportation order). Most people in the US who identify with Hispanic or Latino ethnicity also Identify as being white race (29 million of 50 million). Yes, HIspanic/Latino is a designation of ethnicity, not race, and the enforcement of laws that prohibit actions on the basis of ethnicity generally fall under the category of "national origin" under civil rights laws in the US.

The article doesn't say what made the victim believe that race was the perpetrator's motivation, and it's a glaring omission. In journalism, whether digital, print or broadcast, racism sells. That doesn't make it good journalism, but it does attract ears and eyeballs, and therefore generate advertising revenue.

The idea that an action was racist because of an accusation or presumption about legal residency status is a nonsequitur. I also note that the author of the article only implied that the attack may be racist by not presenting a view contrary to that of the victim, when the victim did not identify an explicit reference to race by the perpetrator. The original poster, in naming this thread, made the leap of stating conclusively that it was racist, but again without identifying a basis for such a conclusion.

To be honest, it sounds like you hate white Americans, perhaps even hate yourself. I am not saying there are no “white” racist people, of course there are, but by your statements you seem to ignoring that Mexicans, South Americans, Jamaicans, etc... that all nationalities have racist people, even against those who are of the same ethnicity. One is a city person and another is from the countryside. You say you get dirty looks every time you speak Spanish? Perhaps those are not dirty looks all the time, but just curious looks or I wonder what he is saying looks, a perplexed look. Maybe sometimes it is for racist reason but I don’t believe that this is the reason every time. The looks you are given are an assumption, by you, of their thoughts.

When examples of racism are directed at one colour of skin all the time, it becomes the norm to generalize one race or ethnicity as being the bigoted ones.

Whites are in power? Should all white people in the USA be removed from their positions? Yes the u.s. currently has a white person in power. Mexico has a Mexican one. China has a Chinese one and those in power are Chinese, Saudi Arabia has a Saudi leader, turkey has Turks in power, etc. Racism is racism and all racism is equal in measure.

I don’t like power in general, regardless of skin colour. Can you say the same?

You do not know what colour my skin is or what my ethnicity is. You seem to have have made assumptions. I have experienced racism many many times from white people, brown, Asian, African people, Mexican people, people from El Salvador, Italian people, Jamaican people, etc... and the list goes on.

If California was so wonderful, why did you leave? Was it because “white people” are in power?

Loose the chip on your shoulder and that might be better responded to, by people, regardless of skin colour or ethnicity.

If you accept the racism towards one by another, you can not deny that racism exists in the reverse. I have seen it by all, I am not denying it, you however are denying the existence from other cultures and their racism. I am positive you have seen it as well, but you deny it. Spaniards were notorious slave traders and racist people way back when as they went to Mexico. This racism is still present today. I believe it is you sir who is denying racism and only attribute it to one skin colour. You are way off, to deny it is racism. Funny things is that studies have been done in Mexico where people there openly admit to their own racism towards other skin tones whether that be darker or lighter skin tones and their ancestral origins, as well as religious divides. Not sure why you can’t admit to it. I recall an incident where Penelopy Cruze was asked where in Mexico she was from. She was clearly offended by this and expressed her displeasure, ending by saying that she was Spanish. The person, to poke the bear, responded by saying, oh, so you are a European Mexican and she just about lost it. She clearly looked down on Mexicans. I found her response to be rooted in racism, and it disgusted me.

Go to China and see how majority feel about people with dark skin, how they are treated. Go to Jamaica and see how some, not all, who is considered black feels about someone who is bi racial or white and the reverse. Look at how people think of those who live in the hills vs. Those who are in the city, same skin tone. Go to Saudi Arabia and see how people from there treat someone who is Jewish, oh wait, you can’t. Jewish people are not allowed. Chop chop! or see how someone who is Christian is treated, check out how women in general are treated and women today are bought and sold. Is there a black slave trade today in places? Is there a white slave trade today in places? Is there a selling of women as sexual slaves? Treating someone as lesser, or with hatred, negativity, based on skin colour, religion, and/or gender, is racism. It is not reserved for American white people, or white peoples. Learn about the caste system in India today, it is racist. You are living in a culturally plural bubble, in a multicultural country.

Look at the Barbary coast and the white slave trade. 16th to the 19th centuries. It is estimated that between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by pirates and sold as slaves in Tunis, Algiers and Tripoli during this time period. Has time changed these views? I do not deny that in America there was a black slave trade. I do not deny that racism exists in American. I am aware that racism is taught, it is learned. I am cautious in some areas of my multicultural city. I know that I could be harassed, assaulted in some areas and have been, simply because of how I look, the color of my skin, my gender, as well as for the language I speak.

Moving to America, England, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, etc.. does not change someone’s racist views of those that look different, have a different belief. it does not erase what you learned growing up. We have seen this with people who have immigrated to England and were previously part of the caste system. A medical dr. In England of Asian decent would not treat a woman because he considered her untouchable in the caste system. Do I believe all asians are racist? No!, but I am aware this is system that was instilled in some, and was a rule of law from a young age and will continue to be a factor for some in their life, no matter where one moves to. To attribute racism to one race, labelling all “white people” as racist, is racist. Clearly you were raised, taught, learned that all white people are racist. Making assumptions as you have, expressing hatred about those you do not know, as you have, is racist. You have had too much koolaid,

I would have more respect for you if you were honest with me, and to yourself. Until you admit it, there is zero chance of things changing.

Whose plight is more important? Who is not racist?

Yes, non-white people can hold racist views and/or act in a racist way. The reality, though, is that in the West, and specifically in North America, white people tend to hold the majority of positions of power. As such, racist attitudes/actions of white people generally have more of a negative impact on others than do the attitudes/actions of non-white people against white people.

Since all humanity emanated from Africa---it seems rather stupid, time wasting and ridiculous to continue to be racist against anyone. We're all brothers and sisters basically. To me it shows how infantile humanity remains. What a fuckin 'waste of time and energy.
