I am disgusted at how much racism still exists, especially in the South. Any comments? I am going with my best friend (who is black) to prom. My teacher was like "you cant go to prom with a ******." It was out side of school, so she cant get in trouble, but I was angry! ERACISM!
What the fuck is wrong with people? The sad thing is, this is actually tolerated in the modern world and preached in some parts. It saddens me to see the inhuman comments that inter-racial couples *or dates in your case* get. I hate some people in this world.
First off that's horrible and that teacher needs to be brought to justice on that one. But, it's true, racism still exists in our everyday world. It's passed down one generation to the next like a disease. There are some who will never break free from that conditioning and pass it on to their children. Hopefully more people will not tolerate it, by any means, and hopefully that will creep into the psyche of some racist, make them think. They, the ones who spread it thrive on ignorrance and situations of disparity. They choose to manipulate the psyche of unfortunate people who don't know any better. Good for you for being angry and for carrying on with your plans anyway. The color of someones skin or a difference in culture is no reason to hate.
Before I moved to Ohio, I honestly thought that Rosa sat in the front of the bus and we all got to use the same water fountain and now everything was fine. Boy.. i got a reality check fast. In my old province, people don't really care if you are black, but you better not be Native because then you will feel racism bitch-slap you across the face.
ugh, racism is rampant here in Saskatchewan. I HATE it, it makes me sick (especially if I catch myself thinking in terms of 'them' and 'us', which happens, alas) People here assume that all Native peoples are lazy drunks who are unwilling to work, and just live off of the government. It's so not true! Argh, the perception that Native people are criminals exists only because society has put them into this hole of poverty and refuses to help them out. It's practically impossible to get a decent job here, especially if you're young and/or Native. So yeah, there are some B&E's around here. Yes, gangs have developed in one half of the city. Because we don't know how to fix our bloody problems, we just aggravate them with racism and stereotyping.
yep... and we haven't even touched on the Stonechild Inquiry. What a big load of horse shit that is. And people talk about it back home, saying "yeah.. it sucks that he froze to death and that the RCMP's left him in the middle of nowhere without proper clothes, but how many times had they dealt with him before?". I grew up listening to that kind of shit... and wow.... it really makes a person ashamed to call SK home.
what about that girl awhile back that those two guys got really really really drunk and then raped? Didn't they try to place all the blame on her "oh, she wanted to drink a lot, she wanted to have sex... all Natives drink too much"... something like that anywas. Justice here is a bloody joke. They threw that guy in jail for a month or two, the one who came by promoting the legalization of marijuana (because he passed a joint to someone, for chrissakes). the Stonechild thing makes me sick to my stomach though. Not because it happened, but because of how little people here care about getting justice for what happened.
I had a teacher in school who told our class that we shouldn't date Mexicans. In fact, he told us it was wrong, or in christian terms "a sin". Of course we also happened to have a member of the class who was Mexican who didn't appreciate the comment too much. It was a private (christian) school though, and any of our attempts to have the teacher reprimanded for his comments went ignored. Apparently there is something in the Bible (in their interpretation) that allows for racisim. You'd think a christian school would be the last place you would hear crap like that, but intrestingly enough they were pretty damn racist. They didn't allow black kids into the school (unless you were the son or daughter of a pastor), and the only mexican in the school was there because he took us to state champs in soccer. (They were a big into soccer at that school).
Yes, sadly racism is still rife in most multi-cultuaral societies. Like element7 said, racism gets passed down like a hereditary disease and the child in question is brought up knowing no better. They then start mixing with "coloured" people at school or whatever these teachings are put into practice. The racist thinks their beliefs are gospel and doesn't understand how they can be wrong. The other week stood in a street waiting to meet someone I saw two kids, who must've been about ten years old throwing stones at a Asian woman and her two children. I was absolutley disgusted, even more so as the lady's oldest kid was no more than seven years old. I'm not very intimidating but I had to tell them to stop, at which point proceeded to call me a girl, which I always get in that area. My scary-looking friend then got rid of them, she totally flipped. The kids really didn't understand what they were doing wrong and why they shouldn't do it again. Racism is going to be around for a long, long time (if it does ever go).
Sure, do you want the long civil-disobedience route like when students barricaded them selfs in universities to protest racist teachers that lead to being beaten and draged out by police many times during the 60's and 70's. Or the flames of violent rebellion like the race riots throught the USs modern history for example the burning of police cars in protest of racist police. Either way you need numbers.
What do you expect...? The civil war never ended... It just got hushed under the carpet a little more, year after year... and is still going strong...
It has more then the civil war. Benton Harbour, Michigan is not in the south yet in June 2003 a race riot started same with Detriot in 1967. It is more that the US has not stoped tearing it self apart since the 60's just the rebellions got hushed under the carpet as the media doesn't want to say America has no clothes.:H Americans don't want to think that the US can turn into Iraq rather quickly, they don't want to think that the next race riot can lead to an all out violent revoltion.
The Civil Rights Act was passed just 40 years ago, which is less than 2 generations. You can't expect racism to disappear like magic. The best we can expect is that over time people will become more accepting of one another's differences. Be glad for what progress we have made but never be satisfied with it. There will always be assholes who can't stand those who are in any way unlike them, whether it's their lifestyle, their faith, or the tone of their skin. If everyone, no matter how they felt, would make at least a half-assed effort to get along, this world would be a much better place.
Where I live there is a huge population of Mexican immigrants. These people are struggling to make ends meet for their family with 3 or 4 families living in a trailer, but people around here in their huge houses, perfectly manicured lawns, and brand new cars have the audacity to complain that they should be speaking English. It really bothers me because these people have the resources to help create a center for the local Hispanic community to learn English. I'm trying to put together something with my school, but people won't donate money or books or anything to help out. The only reason half of the people are helping is because it gets service hours. It really bothers me how badly some of these people get treated. In stores, the Mexicans get harrassed simply because they might have broken English. It's completely understandable but people can't find patience to just listen. Whenever I see that, I have to go over and help out with my broken Spanish. But it's really hard to know that there's only so much I can do and that I can't change the attitude of every person I meet.
What progress? There is still segregation just now they use the class system to keep most blacks in ghettos. The police still harass, assult and murder blacks. No, the reason there is still inequality and racism is not that only 40 years has passed but the system that creats that inequality is still there. You have to smash the class system before you can put a end racism and odds are that will have to be through the flames of violent revolution.
doesnt hafta be violent. and people like Abraham Lincoln and MLK made a difference for us, so it has gotten better. With each new generation I think it gets better. Its just cases like about those teachers that are really bewildering to hear about and make us think things will never get better. I know all too well what its like being around that kind of racism since I'm from lovely south cakalaki.. The government is just fucked. Its gonna find any way it can to generate more money for themselves, and I really dont think its as much of a personal issue with the races now as it was maybe 50 or 100 years ago. We still have a long ways to go...haha this weekend will be a step for me in my attempt to introduce my black boyfriend to my parents, which im not so sure how well that will go.
