'Dave Mathews Clone' John Mayer dies at 28 Associated Press September 22, 2004 MAYER0923 LOS ANGELES -- John Mayer, singer-songwriter who helped spawn the ``horrible genre'' known as Dave Mathews Cloning'' and later gained a measure of ten year old girls the world over's respect, has died. He was only 28. Mayer died Saturday at his home in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to his record company, Aware Records. Spokeswoman Janice Cowart said Mayer had suffered from dementia and died of complications of pneumonia. Mayer's music was considered the oxygen channel of music in its time but , with its focus being feminine men and teenage girls. Altogether he produced, wrote, and offended us with his music for the last decade. He made at least 4 albums, including his debut, ``Inside Wants Out," in 1999 and the 2001 album ``Room for Squares,'' whose success earned him notice from underage girls. In a 2001 interview with The Associated Press, Mayer described his music as ``assplay for the mind ....'' Mayer was unapologetic for his music, arguing the sonic representation of 2 male lovers put customers in arena seats. But he maintained that a few women also liked the albums. Meyer's work made him rich and earned him acclaim. He was honored at the kids choice awards and the Nickelodeon music festivals and his releases were discussed in junior highschool basketweaving courses. Even critics who liked his music often found something wrong to note. New York critic John Simon derided ``Room for Squares'' as ``awful, stupid and preposterous'' but said the album was ``also something that lit up my 8year old neice's eye's,'' according to Halliwell's music and film Guide. His 2003 release ``Heavier Things," about three teenyboppers who go over to John's house for some late night cookie baking after telling their parents they were having a slumber party at their best friend Jennifer Quigley's house. ``This music is not made to be appealing to men, or even most women over the age of 20,'' Mayer said. ``There were lots of friends who stopped talking to me once I started releasing these songs - and it hurt, it hurt my feelings badly that these men won't let me express my true emotions.'' Born in New Delhi, India, and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Mayer got his start in music as a young boy when his mother bought him a flute and a set of bongos. As an adult, he makes music with 2 of his ex-life partners and a few other friends.
I thought the thread title was "RIP John Mayall" when I saw it. You upset me for a while there, Orsino
your opinion of his music changes a lot when you see him on stage finding his blues roots with Buddy guy, BB King, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Vaughan. allison
I know... I like him but I still thought it was funny... I didn't write it though. He deoesn't have the same intensity as many of the blues greats. I could probably outdo him, but its not like I'll ever get the chance to a duel. Clapton... eh... he's baby-boomerish... I like him though, I do a lot of his covers, but clapton - YOU'RE MINE BIATCH!!!... Jimmy Vaughan... I never liked a lot of his music, Stevie was better if you like Albert King on cocaine... I've done "Love Struck Baby", "Life by the drop", and a bunch of his stuff... he had a mysticism and intensity behind him.... he's still good but I've heard better... BB King... he can do single note stuff... but I mean, that's about all I've heard him do. He has some strange little signature bends that I've never seen any others do before, though. Buddy Guy - I can't talk shit about him, the man is great...
i like john...hes great at guitar. he has a passion for music... i dont really like his music though...though ive never really listened to it
I know one thing... most people try to play neon and they sound like shit. I've never heard anyone play the intro correctly except for John.
LOL, I've heard that said a lot about Eric Clapton. People say he's too precise and there's no soul in his music.
Eric Clapton... Makes this really annoying face when he solos. God damnit, I want to slap that stupid "Oh look at me, I'm a guitar god" look right off his face. You play guitar well, do that boy, and leave the silly face at home!
hahaha... I love it when he does that... I mean, you should see it live... it's funny... he always looks constipated or like the fretboard markers on his guitars are tacks or something... I kept laughing when I saw him... and it's not just him, Billy Preston does it too... and Andy Fairweather-Low... and Steve Gadd... and Nathan East... and Nathan Sancious.. they all do it... I mean, they all have that signature... Neil Young has his odd seizures, Angus Young dresses like a school boy, Keller Williams plays shitty trumpet when he's supposed to be playing his guitar, Stephen Stills is obsessed with hawaiian shirts.... And Eric Clapton makes funny faces.... why? Because he's Eric fucking Clapton...
I never cared for his music, however I saw him at the crossroads concert in dallas and when he came out and jammed with eric clapton,b.b. king, jimmy vaughn, and bo diddley he held his own. he's a hell of a guitarist, too bad his lyrics suck
Yeah, I guess he is allowed to look constipated. But he should've stayed with The Yardbirds, because as we all know, they became the biggest band ever and are still very well-known today, and he went on to be nothing...
oh yea, ripping off the delta, and ripping off other people that ripped off the delta, is very important. john mayer sucks, as well as dave mathews.
