I have just read a thing in X (I know ) that when signing up to the voting register, you have to state which party you vote for. The suggestion was that Dems are having their names removed from the register in some states. Is it true that the register includes your choice of party? I doubt that but, if so, maybe everyone should register as Republican.
Thanks for those links. I read that without affiliation, the person can't vote in the primaries. Seems odd, to me, that one sign-up is used for both voting for a 'party' candidate (primaries) as well as casting a vote for the Presidential election. I say it like that because, where I am, in the UK, we register to vote without anything needed to suggest which way we might fill out the ballot. Separately, there's party membership relative to each of the main parties, which means people can take party in in-party votes such as leadership contests, which I think is similar to a Primary. So the electoral register is different from the party membership role. Thinking about those who are fearful that they may be removed from the register in the US, and realise only too late that it has been done, I wonder if there being a system more like the UK would be better. Maybe my ignorance means I am unaware of other aspects which tidy up the system?!
In the U.S. some states have open primaries and some have closed primaries. Same with registration, it differs by state.
