Question about denominations...

Besides the U.U. and U.C.C. (there are none around here) could you all tell me some more liberal christian denominations? I have been looking into Progressive Minnonite churches and stuff like that, but I don't know how to find any around here or anything. Basically any denominations on the more liberal side would be great!

 

The Society of Friends. Traditional Baptists. The Anglican Church. All depends on what you mean by liberal?

What do you mean by UCC? United Church of Canada?

 

United Church of Christ, Burby. Heck I used to be a member of a UCC when I was young.

 

Okay Well at least I got that it was the United Church. I think my mom went there as a kid. She wasn't baptized though...my grandpa was a mason

I think that is partially why we (as in my siblings and I) were never baptized...

I am actually doing it basically to make my mom happy. I mean, she isn't like an overbearing mom MOST of the time or anything, and she wants me to go because she thinks it is what's best for me. I mean, I am not trying to do it solely to make her happy, but as long I as live in my parent's house I would like to try to not start any arguements about how I need to go to church because I know she only wants me to go for my best interests, NOT because she want's me to be controlled.

That, and I don't really HATE church in and of itself. I know to take the pastor as a man, he speaks in error and the church doctrine has error and stuff like that, so I know I don't have to beleive anything anyone in a church tells me to. I don't have a problem with people NOT going to church, I just choose to, mostly to keep the peace.

 

The bad part is I don't know of any of those around here! Well, except maybe the Traditional Baptists... I will check them out. I REALLY love the Society Of Friend's way of doing the services, but I don't think there is any around here. If I had a choice, I would probably go to a Progressive Minnonite Church or Society Of Friends Church.

I will look into traditional baptists though.

By liberal I mean like, they don't claim the Bible to be without errors, Peace Churches, that sort of thing... Just something that is ANY more liberal than the Southern Baptists.

And yeah, I too am searching for somewhere to"call my home" (I like the liturgy, but i am not sure of any of the churches that follow it...it is hard) so to speak...I am really glad i had that talk with that Anglican minister

Thanks a lot Burbot! Sadly though, I am not at all close to lexington, louisville OR Owensboro... Which REALLY sucks because I think of any denomination, I probably agree with the quakers or Progressive Minnonites more than any of the others (I would have said the UU as well, however I don't think they really have a "doctrine" or anything like that...)
I suppose the fact that they are monthly meetings on the other hand would be a BIG plus though.... I may start going to one of them in the future, but as of now, I have trouble driving in a town probably 1/10 or less the size of Louisville during a weekday... hahaha. I am not really familiar with Ownsboro or where it is in relation to me, I have only been there maye once or twice, if at all, and it has been a long time ago.

Thanks a lot for allt he info on the Baptists as well. Do you know anything about the Episcipol Church? There is one or two around here, but this is a church I know little about... I have glanced at the Wikipedia article, but it seems to be refering to any church with a sort of hierarchy as being episcipol (Catholic, Anglican, etc.). I guess I don't really like the idea of a hierarchy of faith, because I beleive we are ALL the same, no one is better than anyone else in God's eyes, and NO ONE is flawless.

Episcopal basically refers to any church run with bishops (Lutheran is also a episcopal church) as opposed to the grassroots form of churches that most prodestant sects are.

It also refers to the American branch of the Church of England (Anglican Church). I really don't know much about it to be honest. I find the wikipedia page too much to sift through, and religioustolerance.org doesn't have an artcle set on it which I find slightly frustrating.

From what I gather from various sources around me though, it is on the left side of centre in the way of doctrine (a local member recently left the church to start and Orthodox mission because he disagreed with the Church's stance on homosexuality), and it also follows the Liturgy (which I personally like about it). I also remember a CBC piece about the Anglican Church and the guy presenting it said he had seena young man wearing a T-Shirt reading "I don't belong to organized religion. I am an Anglican", tough I don't know how accuratly that reflects the church as a whole.

Actually, it's not ALWAYS left of center. Sometime it can be on a church to church basis.

 

Thanks for the links, Burbot! I think I may check out of of the local episcipol churches. I guess the ones around here are anglican because they are episcipol in their denomination...

AS portal guy said, I too think that most of the things go with the individual churches. This is evident by both the pages you gave me, and the fact that the episcipol church nearly split over the issue of one church ordaining a gay bishop a few years back. I remember that at the time, a lot of right wing episcipol churches were covering up the word "Episcipol" on their church sign, while a lot of other churches supported that church.

 

That is true, I guess I should have maybe put a word such as "generally" or something...

Also by "left of centre" I meant it to mean that it wasn't far either way on the spectrum, but generally a little more liberal than most churches you hear about. Again, it seems I am not the clearest of explainers...

 

Whenever I do end up explaining myself after such an event, I always feel as though everyone thinks I am just saying such things to be accepted and to appear right.

Thought this was quite coincidental timing. My friend tell sme today that he is sort of going on a little questo for a "better" church (he goes to a Lutheran one) after attending this years Easter service and not being that movied by how routine the whole thing felt to him (like there was no spontaniatyand whatever). Yeah. This doesn't add much to the discussion, but I thought it was sort of like all this coming together at once being sort of neat...
