If I get a peyote cactus, can I just eat it as it is, or is there some kind of extraction procedure?

no, you can just eat it as it is, best to skin it first, and it does not taste good by any stretch of the imagination, the taste is usually refered to as a super sour cucumber dripping with snot witha slighty salty aftertaste. Which is why alot of people prefer to do an extraction of some kind, or dry it out first, there are a few extraction methods listed for san pedro and peruvian torch on here and plenty more on the interweb. Try erowid.org for some.

in Pihkal they blend it and mix it with orange juice. I think the native american church puts it in the mouth until it turns soft, and then chews and swallows it. how many buttons?

I haven't gotten any yet. How many buttons would I need to have a mediocre trip?

Start with one - there is magic to cactus - almost any dose is good.

I've heard 3-7. but even a tiny bit of cacti is amazing, if not uber trippy.

    Thanks everyone,

I'm looking at a possible online purchase:

    http://www.everyonedoesit.com/online_headshop/Peyote_Cactus_4_years_old.cfm?iProductID=431

The cactus in the pic looks rather small, and the weight says 140g (I don't know if that includes the pot as well). I think I'll order it and eat it little my little. Maybe I'll post a report on the psychedelic experience forums.

BTW, on that same site, there's a few other cacti products:

    http://www.everyonedoesit.com/search/index.cfm?sSearchString=peyote

There's Peruvian Torch and San Pedro Cactus. I've never heard of these before, but I take it these all contain mecaline? Can anybody tell me a bit more about them (contrast and compare to peyote in terms of quality of trip, intensity, amount to consume, preparation methods). I'm trying to do my research here before I try something new, so I very much appreciate your help.

Get the powdered cactus, not the actual cactus. It'll be a lot easier on you :)
