What is THC for? Like, why did it evolve? I think we can safely assume it didn't evolve so humans could get stoned, so what does it do in nature? Since it's on the bud cases, it seems like it might have something to do with protecting the seeds from being eaten, maybe it's toxic to bugs? Anyone know?

well someone can correct me if im wrong
but thc which is a trichome can protect
    marijuana from being eaten.
like with lots of plants bugs like to eat and mess with it.
this is the site and its been posted before

trichomes are hairs, not thc, the thc is excreted at the base of these small hairs.

i was reading somewhere about trichomes with thc making photosynthesis more effective? maybe it filters certain wavelengths of light, andor catches light and refracts it over the bud more?

ive always wondered this myself, i dont think theyve really found out what it does though

    You're sort of right SB.

    Quote:

    (8) It appears that the resin sphere acts as an UVB receptor and magnifying lens. The latter apparently lets it gather in a lot more photons than would otherwise be possible; because a lens also acts as a prism, the resin sphere may prevent some wavelengths from being focused where the phytochemical processes are taking place because they could interfere with the phytochemical process that makes THC.

If you're feeling technical the full article is here:

you'd think the bigger leaves would be covered as well as the smaller ( closer to the bud ) leaves, cos the bigger ones are doing more photosynthesis?

i read somewhere about it being used as some sort of protection like trippin was saying, also in low humidity, and even extreme conditions the plant produces more of the resin ( and so thc ) to protect itself

hmm perhaps the bud is sensitive to certain wavelengths, which thc filters out? and thats why it grows on the bud?

can someone explain how it protects the bud from being eaten?

edit: wow that is what the article says, amazing, another possible industrial use for thc? uv receptor?

Dude, you'd have to plaster yourself with the resin...imagine everyone walking around the beach, completely stoned out of their minds...hahaha. What a great idea for sunscreen...

haha nar it would be a pointless sunscreen, UV is the stuff we dont want ;) so it would be an obscure use if any. but im sure there are many uses for uv-filter like thc in science and research and industry and that
