Creationism was what most people, common people at least, believed until dinosaur bones were dug up en mass around the middle of the 19th century. Which pretty much disproved the Bible, since dinosaurs aren't mentioned anywhere in it. So preachers back then started saying, that is because the devil put those bones there. He dug up the ground, and buried the bones there just to deceive people.

Then in 1956 scientist found that by analyzing samples of one of the isotopes of Uranium, you could predict the age of the universe. Which according to their studies then, would be about 4.55 billion years old.

No Christian has ever questioned this or explained why they still believe what they do, that the age of the universe is 6,000 years. But one conservative Christian did. I used to read The Plain Truth magazine in the 80's, partly because it was free. And one writer for that magazine said a Christian's response to that should be simple. No, the devil isn't responsible this time. Actually, God just created Uranium that way 6,000 years ago. And he did it to test our faith.
