alright guys, just to give a little background on myself so you all understand where i am coming from this is my third phase of vegetarianism. my first was my sophomore year in college, and i was a vegetarian for 4 months, simply testing my will power. the 2nd time lasted 6 months because i was a vegetarian during my entire stay in india. this time my reasoning is much different, i have no desire to eat meat, because i couldn't kill an animal myself...and just thinking about it makes me nauseous. in 4-5 days it will be three months. at this point it seems it might be a life time thing...but i never know now i was doing fine on protein for awhile...but recently my appetite has been extremely suppressed, due to a lot of changes in my life (break up, new love, lonliness, and long work days)...anyway i have been eating like a bird by comparison to what i usually eat, and i have been getting no where near the amount of protein i need. (in fact, 2 nights ago i had a dream about eating chicken...hated myself for it afterwards [in the dream] but my body appreciated it). i feel my body CRAViNG protein! i have been getting high protein smoothies frequently which range from 18-24 grams of protein.. i've been told i should buy muscle milk and make daily shakes to get at least half my required amount of protein in addition to what i eat...muscle milk was suggested to me by a friend who isnt a vegetarian. he told me it is the best tasting of them all. anyway i just did some research because i was planning on going to get a big jar of it today...but the reserach ive done is freaking me out i know how to get protein, but im looking for high doses of it for when i am lacking appetite like i have been recently. and advice or suggestions welcome, the sooner the better too thanks!
Zone Bars are at all the Target stores by me. This kind (dark caramel pecan) is my favorite with dark chocolate strawberry as a close second. I had a Power Max before which I think had 22g of protein or something ridiculous like that. It was more of a fudgey gunky kind of texture but tasted good. Edamame is also great and it's good to eat a nice fresh grown plant kind of food. I like them with soy sauce.
wheat berries.. 26 gram protien in one cup.. way better tasting than eating oatmeal or cereal ps.. i eat meat too
You could buy whey protein supplements. Mix some of it with a glass of milk and you'll be ingesting a shit ton of protein.
thanks man,...i'm trying to find out the healthiest one in general, more specifically for a vegetarian. i, just today, opened and used Jay Robb's egg white protein...one serving has 24 g of protein... i won't be using it everyday...but i still pose the question: what is the healthiest protein powder/supplement? EDiT: wowwwwwwwwwwww i read your post wrong the frirst time, thank you man man, i may try whey protein next time, that or brown rice protein... sorry dude thanks again!
idk, but i would just eat meat.. how healthy can a supplement powder be anyway?? probably better off eating other stuff with high protein.. like grains etc...
i will meat when i could kill an animal to survive...that's how i feel and i'm not gonna change my mind... you are probably right about them all being slightly unhealthy...but i need them as a backup for days where i am not gonna get all my protein. i have been undergoing a lot of mental changes, so my appetite isn't constant...anyway i feel you, and these powders are by no means, my only attempt at getting proteing, just a back up....
nutiva organic hemp protein + fiber 54% + + rdi of fiber 37 % protein, 10% beneficial fas, 43% fiber, chlorophyll, magnesium, zinc, and iron.... one serving provides 11 grams of RAW organic protein .....Although its not as much as the others.......i feel this is the healthiest....i was turned on to this brand by a raw vegan friend of mine
Whey protein is probably your best bet. It's amino acid profile is complete, it's what bodybuilders use after workouts to make sure their body is not missing any of the materials it needs to repair itself. It is absorbed fairly quickly so you would probably want to take like quarter scoops spread throughout the day / with meals. I have a strong feeling those warnings for muscle milk are BS, and I'm sure it tastes great but it has plenty of carbs and fat as well. Same with the Zone bars, yummy and calorically dense. So if you're after just protein they aren't ideal choices. I don't really have experience with the plant based proteins people have mentioned and they may be fine for your purposes. I know that different proteins have varying levels of biological availability, with Whey being at the top of the list, and eggs being the best natural source. Whey powder and eggs are pretty damn cheap and effective. You will find them both in my house at all times.
I tend to stay away from supplements and eat a diverse array of legumes, beans, and seeds, along with exclusively whole wheat grains.
lentils beans and nuts!, ive been searching to find ths type of seed everywhere and I really wish I could find it.... its very small smaller then the diameter of a piece of rice, and apparently has every type of amino acid the body needs, and you can put in in pretty much everything as there is no taste...
I've heard it's more closely related to beats of all things. It's one of those pseudo grouped plants. It's healthy as hell though so I guess that's all that matters!
THATS IT!! hell yeah i need to remember that now, theyre so healthy, im getting some now that you helped me find it. love ya man
Glad I could help :daisy: also i would like to say I made this thread after being vegetarian, (for the third time) but for only a few months. I was having frequent low blood sugar spells at the time. I am doing great now, and am NOT using any protein shakes or supplements. In fact I'm teaching nutrition classes and have learned a lot, and eat as mellowviper advised: it's the healthiest way Quinoa for me though is key :drool5:
what you need all that protein for anyways.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=aR9iz8d_Dj4

I have to limit soy, it does bad things to my body. Tofu is a special occasion kind of deal for me, and I limit most other soy products from my diet almost exclusively (edamame, the actual beans are special occasion for me as well)
