First Corinthians chapter twelve speaks about the nine gifts of the spirit. The sixth gift is prophecy and the ninth gift is interpretation of tongues. This doesn't happen much in mainstream churches because there are alot of false prophets going on today. However, the real believers know about these God-given gifts and those who are truly blessed, often possess one or more. Sometimes, through speaking in tongues (Bible stated evidence of being filled with the holy ghost) the connection with God is so strong that he will deliver his message through the words of the speaker. With that in mind, I would like to share with you the two messages that were given tonight..... God, speaking through one of the sisters at service said: "Why do you continue in your wicked ways when you know that I am coming back soon." God speaking through Pastor's wife (which happens more often than others) "Miracles are expected by those who do not spend much time with me. I will tell you that only the true in heart will perform them and they will be the ones who reach out to mankind during the end." (she talked to fast to write, but this is roughly what was said) This doesn't happen often, but at times we will have a transformation service. Much like what took place during Pentecost, we will all be deep in prayer and on one accord. During that time God makes his presence known. He wanted me to share this message with all of you, believers or not.
the churches i've attended always considered the gift of speaking in tongues to be eloquence and the ability to communicate in multiple languages.
i move, byt eh grace of god, in the gift of prophecy and and year and a half ago when i was baptised in the holy spirit i begna speaking in tongues..i have found speaking in tongues and in partilcuar praying in tnogues both in open worship settings and in my own personal devotional times extremely edifying and it has strengthen my remationship with god so much... i think it is sad that the gifts of the spirit are not widely recognised, believed in or used...god said that in these days (the days after christians ascension to heaven) he will pour out his spirit on all people, he said we shall all prophesy...granted some may have a gifting in the prophetic and get accurate propethic words ona regular basis, but god has said he will use all his people to prophesy..and we are called to eagerly desire the gift of prophesy... i partilcuar believe that in thses days we are livving in god is goint o use prophesy more and more to give christians insight and revelation in non belivers lives, i believe he will disclose infomration from their secret place to us to reveal himself to them...but we christians need to be open to recieve from the lord and to act obediently when we hear him!! a word of encouragement if you lack faith in the gift of prophecy.. i think we are all agreed that satan speaks today, ever get thoughts in your head which disgust you and your like, how on earth did you get in my head?!! ever feel a nagging voice temptin you to do something you know wont glorify your father in heaven? ever hear a voice within telling you you are rubbish, no good and worthless? this is certainly not the lord...so it is clear that satan speaks today.. well then if satan speaks to us today, how much more power and authority does god have to speak to us today??!! praise god! god is alive and kicking, open your hearts and ears to hear from him today..when with non believers ask the lord if he has something he specifically wants you to say to them..be open, be bold..take leaps of aith and we will see nations transformed by the power of our amazing god!!!!
Chickabean, I always wonder why Charismatics only practice 'some part' of the biblical gift of speaking in languages? If the biblical descriptions of 'the gift of languages' were fully practiced today - then at least some (if not all) of your congregation would be speaking in known foreign languages (previously unknown or unmastered by them). Confusingly, these groups ONLY and without exception always happen to speak in 'Language of Angels'? Another observation.. I have yet to see anyone having what appeared as 'flames' abover their heads either? So would you agree that only 'some parts' of the original gifts are still being used today? Mainly - speaking in an unrecognisable 'Angel Language'?
Which is pretty much just jibberish (according to lingual analyses I've read about). Unless you think jibberish is the language of God [ha!], then it seems like just another trance. People tend to mumble and groan and stuff when they get in trances, all over the world. Not saying such an experience isn't worth something, but to call jibberish a language seems like a stretch.
could you please tell me the refrence to scripture in which it states that flames above heads is a spiritual gift? i think you may be confused with one supernatural incidnet that occured when some where baptised in hte holy spirit...this is different to the spiritual gifts that god gives to us all... also i know many people who dont justspeak in tongues of angels but ongues of other nations...it is ana amzing miracle of god and i have seen people saved through this extraordinary gifting. spiritual gifts may appear to only be used in part theses days but that is not becuase god gives them only in part but because of the lack of desire and willingness in his people to use them...god promised when jesus went back up to heaven to pour his spirit upon all ..jesus also said tghat we will see greater things then when he was around..its time to start moving further in the gifts of the spirit
dont mean to sound rude..but could you enlighten me as to wear you found an angel to translate the angelic tongues? which angel in particluar told you it was jibberish?
It isn't practiced because too many false prophets are spreading a different message other than the original teachings of Jesus Christ. It's biblical prohecy. God spoke of it, Jesus spoke of it, and all four gospel writers spoke of it. It's kind of sad that today's mainsream teachings disregard the correct way of baptism and discourage speaking in tongues when God promised it as a gift of his spirit. I use to believe that it was a fraud, or some special gift only given to a select few until I was filled with the holy ghost. The promise is for ALL of God's believers. If you are baptised in the name of Jesus, then God will you with his spirit. Gifts of the spirit (listed in Corinthians) however, aren't. Also, tongues is not an angelic language. 1 Peter says that even angels long to look into these gifts. There a quite a few churches who have entire congregations that are filled with the holy ghost. Why aren't all churches? Because not all churches in this day and age have truth. Tongues promised by God in the old testament: (Joel 2:28) Fulfilled in the new testament: (2:1-4, 8:1-25, 10:44-48, 19:1-6)
Chickabean, Your correct that the dancing flames were not necessarily a 'Gift' for all believers for all time. In the same way, the spontaneous ability to speak foreign languages is not necessarily how the gift would be always given, all through time. In those particular cases, there was good reason to have the gifted believers quickly attain a new language (for speaking the Good News of course) Now, we have amazing translating resources, language schools and certainly a complete 'canon' of the Word, which can has been translated into most languages. Certainly we see this gift being used today among some missionaries who are able to learn a new language in almost supernatural time and efficiency. Some of the Missionaries coming from Africa to England have mastered the English language better than the natives themselves!.. and in just a few short years! So I think we can agree the gift is still given at times when its necessary. As for the typical 'speaking in tongues', as defined and practiced by most of the so-called 'bornagain' charismatic churches.... You are a rare rare exception if you have ever seen anyone spontaneously speak in a verifiable foreign language which they previously had no knowledge of! I have never once seen or heard of anyone speaking anything but a 'Jibberish' which is called 'Angelic' or sometimes 'Gods language' As one poster mentioned - its very similar to what we call 'jabbering' and usually it 'Sounds like' a 'language' which the speaker (in their mind) thinks Hebrew sounds like. I commented to a charismatic Pastor, during the height of LotR popularity, some people making what is really just 'Elvish' (and sometimes even Klingon) sounds and mixing in (what they think) ancient Hebrew noises would sound like. (wierdly.. making yiddish 'S's or New York Jewish accents - which is NOT ancient Hebrew). So even in churches that teach the Gift of Languages is still available for everyone - its RARELY ever used legit. Your belief in a 'Second Baptism' and the meaning you pour into the word 'Filling vs Infilling' is probably a whole another topic Interesting Topic Chickabean.. hope to discuss this more!
i pray in tongues in my devotional time and also sing in tongues when i worship...i have found that tongues have strengthened my faith immensely...i have a fantastic preach on the subject by an amazing man called Ram Babu who has an extraordinary healing ministry...he gave a year to speaking in tongues and the affect this has had on his spiritual life is astounding..the faith that has built up within him is massive and god is using mightily because of his obedience and gods sovereign grace. just last month i was at a conference in brighton for my family of churches and a pastor prayed in tongues over a woman with cancer...afterwards he was told by a christian present that he had commanded the cancer to leave in Mandarin! i understand this isnt wide spread today but it is a gift of the spirit and my point is that god definately does still give and move through the gifts of the spirit in our day. And even if, as you say, some of these angelic tongues are jobberish..if they are cried out from the heart during worship and devotion to God, where is the harm? it is simply a soul longing for god, crying out to him in worhsip without having the words to express a certain feeling... i have also found personally that singing in tongues has opened me up alot to hearing from god and receiveing prophetic revelation from you...we are spiritual beings who live with the power that raised jesus christ from the dead inside of us..we are called by god to eagerly diesire the gifts of the spirit and that is what i do..i believe this to be totally biblical. as for baptism in the spirit, this is clearly stated numerous times in the new testament and i have expereienced it first hand...i also experience regularly the outpouring of gods spirit and pray to be filled up as much as possible. i believe it to be of great imporatnce that we are filled with the holy spirit, not only so we are effectively moving in the gifts of the spirit but also as it is the spirit of god that guides and prompts us..he is the great counsellor left with us after jesus' ascension...so drink up all who are thirsty
I meant that the "angelic language" that occurs when people speak in tounges is basically the same thing as when a person randomly starts making sounds, like when kids pretend to speak chinese or something.
i was watching a program on discovery about this phenomena. there's a difference in the brain wave patterns of people who trance out and start "speaking in tongues" and people who are just speaking jibberish purposefully. while i've NEVER taken the gift of tongues to be anything but the ability to speak the gospel in different languages to spread the message, as the believers received at pentacost, i do believe theirs some strange firing going on in the brains of the people like chickabean. but since those origianl followers received the ability to speak other languages and were told to go out and speak to the world, i'm left wondering what purpose this "speaking in tongues" has for spreading the gospel, which was the original in tent of hte gift, if no one can understand what you're saying.
1 Corinthians 14 Gifts of Prophecy and Tongues 1Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. 2For anyone who speaks in a tongue[1] does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.[2] 3But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort. 4He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[3] but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,[4] unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified. 6Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction? 7Even in the case of lifeless things that make sounds, such as the flute or harp, how will anyone know what tune is being played unless there is a distinction in the notes? 8Again, if the trumpet does not sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle? 9So it is with you. Unless you speak intelligible words with your tongue, how will anyone know what you are saying? You will just be speaking into the air. 10Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. 11If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and he is a foreigner to me. 12So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church. 13For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. 14For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. here it clearly states in 1 corinthians 14 that in biblical newt testament churches, spirit filled believers were speaking in tongues that were not translated as tongues from other nations..."he utters mysteries with the spirit"...i believe there is a place as kc said for tongues which god gives that are real languages especailly in propethic evangelism...but there is also place for so called 'unintelligable' tongues...they are spoken as praise and to edify youre own spirit...and others spirit if the interpretation of the tongue is revealed. when i am praising god i sometimes find myself crying or signing out in tongues without thinkin about it just in awe and adoration of god...this i believ is the soul crying out to god...as paul says i 1 cor 14:14 i will pray with my spirit... other times when im lost for words or god puts someone on my heart but i dont understand why, i will pray in tongues rather than english...i believe this to be becuase god knows my heart, he knows my soul...just like many of you will pray in your head...my praying in tongues is my spirit praying to god, and its me saying, father i dont know what to say but you know how i feel and you know what you want me to do
Here is what I have been looking for. These are all the scriptural references of the importance of being filled with the holy ghost and speaking in tongues. http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=45279&postcount=1
This is interesting... People believe in the Bible. People don't believe in prophecizing. While the Bible is written account, it is prophecy as well. Revelation is complete prophecy, the book of Daniel speaks frequently about his prophetic dreams. A lot of religious folks believe in the Bible, but they disregard prophecy from the lips of others. That is why we stress how important it is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. God can speak to his people through any means he feels neccessary. If he wants to send a message by using a mortal mouth he will. It is correc to say that not all prophecy is true. That is why you need the Holy Spirit. God's presence living inside of you will give you the discertion between his words and the words that are false.
yes i totally agree, and your psot is so biblical..its great..im filled with the holy spirit and couldnt iamgaine life with out it now..walking daily in the spirit is my aid and my joy..its amazing..and watchin my boyfriend be filled and seeing his life change so radically was so beautiful and ...well, amazing!
About 20 years ago I was coming home from work and I was just thanking the Lord for my life. Suddenly when I was in the middle of my prayer the Lord spoke to my mind and told me my wife was going to have a baby. When I received that message I was almost speachless. I said God, my wife and I had never even thought about haveing another child. Then I said thankyou Lord for the child you are giving us. When I got home my wife was sleeping and I was just watching her and said to myself, poor Pam she is pregnant and does not even know it. I then went to bed only to wake up 4 hours later and find my wife in the bathroom suddenly sick. The rest is history, but if you ever read the post, Jesus died for you. That's the kid Jesus told me about. That was about a 4 hour prophecy God gave to me.
