My hair is 2.5 inches on top and about 2 inches on the sides. I had my hair backcombed a couple years ago, but it was a good deal longer than this. I'm kinda anxious to start. What do you guys/gals think would be a good length to backcomb at, if you were me?

Start natural just wash with residue free soap and back comb when you got the lenght, it will already started knoting, and you'll see if you really want to backcomb or not when you hair will be 4 inches

I think when I did it a couple years ago, it was around 5 inches maybe. Not much problem getting it lie down then.

I've been treating my hair like that the past week. I'm not sure if I just want to let it mat on its own though. I guess I could always seperate them though, if they got too big. I like to have a good deal of movement/thinner dreads.

Yea mine are very small, if I want bigger ones I just let them congo, if not separate. You can control it pretty easily but I don't do it I just let them do their own things I just won't let them form just one big dreads eh.

Here are mine after about 2 weeks of backcombing and surfing. They have had one wash.
There are only two, but I can still join the club, right?! :p

Those are gonna turn out nice, Iko. I used a wool hat when I had my dreads a couple years ago. I wore to bed and I really think it helped the process. After 3 months they start to really get better and better. They really have their ups and downs before then.

mine started at 2 inches naturaly
and as ya can tell most were kept fairly thin..somne extremely thin..only a few got semi thick
if ya start wearrin wool hats alot and washin with residuer free soap and just seperate em often i bet ya by the timer theyre 4-5 inches and long enough to backcomb i bet ya already have a few started

Actually, within a week I've already had somewhere around 15-20 mini-dreads form. They are real thin...my hair is medium-wavy to curly, so it sorta lends itself to the natural process. This is awesome!

not to hijack the thread and all, however im curious as to separating the dreads, what are the benefits of this and does this speed up the dreading process?

nice backcomb hair, mine was pretty much crazy like your with all the hair standing up, almost made me wish that was the way they would end up cuz that'd be hella unique! I did my backcomb around 2 weeks ago and my hair was approx. 4-5 inches in length and in my opinion a good size to start with, although i have, on all the tips, non backcombed hair that hopefully will knot up soon enough!
