Okay, im knitting this scarf for a friend for christmas (only the second thing ive ever knitted). but the sides are rolling in, which i wouldnt mind, except it rolls all the way so now its more of a tube and looks kinda weird (the scarf's not very wide, if that makes any difference). i was just wondering if there was a way to fix this? or if its just kinda one of those things you have to deal with...or, if there's some way to prevent it in the future :& any suggestions from the wise peoples here? well, thanks for reading
When you start a new row are you pulling kind of tight on the yarn? that might make the last stitch of the last row really tight. I think that makes it roll. try just not pullong so tight when you start a new row. I don't know if there's a way to fix what's already done, though.
what stitch pattern are you using? Sometimes a knit 1 row, purl 1 row will curl at the edges... also, after the scarf is done, you can block it, but that will only "fix" so much
stockinette stitch will curl up on you, if that's what you are doing. how much do you have done? is it too late to start over and do a different stitch? i'm not a very experienced knitter at all, i don't really know what would help that, but i'm sure one of the super talented knitters on the board will see this and help you out.
I agree with Levi, I think you are pulling to hard on your thread while knitting. Relax and hold the yarn loosly in your hand. When you start a new row don't pull it so tight. When you are knitting you should not have to force the needles to fit in each stitch, the needles should slide very easily though the yarn, and the yarn should be somewhat loose on your needles. Good luck!
I am thinking that you are doing stockinette stich as well.... A rib pattern makes a perfect scarf, and it looks the same on both sides....but I guess that advice will only help you in the future..
sorry it took so long to respond, been scary-busy! but thanks for the advice i think the problem was just pulling too hard. and yeah, im using the knit 1 row, purl 1 row method. im sorry, but i don't know what stockinette stitching is ^^;;, knit and purl is as far as i know! im letting the yarn be a lot looser now, maybe at least 1 half of the scarf'll be un-curled? lol heh and if you dont mind more dumb questions, what exactly is blocking? and would steam-ironing it possibly let the yarn stretch/loosen a bit, and uncurl it? thanks for helping me in my ignorance!
Stockinette is knit 1 row purl 1 row.... Blocking is when you wet the item and let it dry in the shape it should be....BUT it only works on natural fibers....
ahh okay, thanks unfortunately, i'm pretty sure the yarn i used isn't natural. but that is a nifty trick!
