I saw the film recently and want to hear your "back in my day..." stories since I wasn't alive in 1978. I know the film was controversial then but the fact remains it exists. Why do you think it was allowed then and do you think it could have been made today? Just how much have attitudes changed in Western society in the 34 years since?

Also if you know something in particular about Brooke Shields (and her parents) and how she felt about the movie then and now that could be interesting too. Is/was she a nudist?

    I welcome your thoughts.

Maybe you should have asked this on a movie forum ;-)

Afaik the movie plot is based on the autobiographies of photographer Ernest Bellocq, and the design of the set is inspired by his photos from then. Malle tried to create a realistic painting of this subculture, that was a counterpart to the narrow minded society main stream then.

But I guess you asked because Brooke was 11 when the movie was made. For this reason it was banned in some countries for some time. But before the movie, at the age of 10 Brooke already had posed for nude photos for photographer Garry Gross (later as an adult she achieved in a court process that Gross shouldn’t publish them any more). Probably it was her parents’ part to push her into movie/show business at an early age. I don’t think because they were nudists, but because they were keen on making their daughter a ‘famous actress’, no matter how. They already told about this when the baby was born. Sad, I guess she missed important parts of her childhood.

But the “young sexy actress” theme in movies is not a single thing. For example Jodie Foster was 13 making “Taxi Driver” by Martin Scorsese, Brigit Bardot was 15 when she became Roger Vadim’s muse, and afaik the movie “Et Dieu… créa la femme” was filmed when she was still minor, but published after her majority (and in the US only published shortened/censored).

I guess about Brooke’s view on her first movie you’ll find tons of interviews and articles on the net if you only look for.

1978, was it? Back then the world was still mostly in the mode that there wasn't going to be any more censorship, the legacy of the Earl Warren years of the Supreme Court (in the USA). So that movie was made and generated some controversy, but it was all legal.

The major thing that's changed since then is a recognition that there can be sexual contact between adults and children, and that it can happen and be hidden for years. You must have heard of the revelations involving pedophile Catholic priests, but that actually came later than a lot of other incidents of the same type, including a lot within families. Along with actual sexual contact, there's a lot of attention given to "kiddie porn", sexualized images of children. That's the area where there's been the most backtracking in going back to legal censorship, not just porn but other stuff that may not reach that level, but is also considered to sexualize children. That's happened at the same time as the growth of a huge commercial pornography industry. So now people are ready to see a connection made between sexual abuse of children, presentation of children in sexual situations as entertainment, and the whole setup being done for the purpose of making money. A movie like Pretty Baby wouldn't have such an easy time now.

Actually, Bardot was over 18 when God Created Woman was made. She was born in September 1934. She was nearly 22 when it was released in 1956.
