From what I have heard based on internet research it was my idea that there is a certain point where psylocibin production slows down, and that it is better to pick shrooms when they are fairly small. I recently came across a five mushroom ounce, and they were the most powerful thing I have ever experienced, ego loss life changing spiritual experience off of 1.6 grams (I usually take an eighth). What has been the experience of other people with very large mushrooms.
it matter on how they are grown, what flush it is, and when they are picked. thw wya you grow it has everything to do with it. + the Fourth flush i think seems to be the most potent flush of mushrooms when growing. + you are spose to pick them before right before the veil breaks, when the veil breaks, its losing its psylocibin production ive had big mushrooms that are good.. and small ones.. that are just as good. some small ones (called aborts) are sometimes the most potent of the batch.
Thanks for the reply mephist00. It just surprised me that this was the case. It breaks the norm from the somewhat extensive experience with mushrooms that I have had, but I will definitely keep what you said in mind next time.
You probably just got a larger strain. It's true that psilocybin and psilocin production stop right before sporulation. This is because the fungus has reached its goal and doesn't need to stop things from eating it anymore. Were the caps completely open or were they still conical?
My guess would be it is a differnce of species rather than a difference of strain of cubensis. I may be wrong, but I don't thing cubensis vary a huge amount. (If anyone has some documentation on this, please post.) See: http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_info4.shtml etc. (http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/) This time of year, people may have a lot of varieties that are found outside rather than grown indoors.
They are definately cubensis, that is the one thing I am sure of. The caps are a cylinder pyramid shape but open.
okay...I think my thought that cubes don't vary much in potency must be wrong. On mycotopia and shroomery there's a lot of people who say strain doesn't necessarily affect potency or type of trip....same for what substrate they are grown in. (Like this very recent one: http://forums.mycotopia.net/fungi-growing-edible-medicinal-magic-mushrooms/35730-cube-cube-cube.html) I think everyone would agree that strain can affect size. But, they don't specifically say that they don't vary a lot in potency....I must have just made that up....it must not be true. I used to think if I knew they were cubes then I'd know how much to take...but I'm questioning that now. As far as size: From Shroomery: http://www.shroomery.org/5181/When-should-I-harvest http://www.shroomery.org/8488/When-should-I-harvest (They say harvesting when fully mature does not make them less potent.) So...does it seem like maybe size/maturity, strain, or substrate don't necessarily determine potency....but something else does for cubes? What else would it be that determines potency...FAE, temp, humidity...maybe? Or maybe genetics on the specific set of spores?
Some cubes are WAY more potent than others. it's the strain that makes the difference (and the handeling post picking).
