WHO LOVES THEM???? I am currently going through a major fucking obsession with them...... please tell me I am not alone.
You aren't alone. A while ago i got Roseland NYC live and could not stop listening. I think I overdosed though, I haven't been able to get into their stuff recently.
Love Portishead, but as far as I knew they only had- what? like 2 albums, and a handful of guest appearances and remixes... Is there something new that I'm missing? I'd be REALLY interested in hearing some new stuff.
thumbs up... Portishead is amazing, ive listened to it a few times, i dont have the albums. but ive listened enough to know that its fuckin amazing, great atmospheric vibes that'll send shiver down your spines, and a nice jazzy feel. its beautiful music i should get back to very soon.
They have great atmospheric tunes indeed, but I can't listen to it everyday. I do like this kind of slow triphop (I think? ) though.
I have loved Portishead for years and years. The live DVD is pretty good. If you're into that sorta music you should also check out Tricky, Morcheeba etc
I've their albums, but don't you find them a little depressing? If I'm not depressed before I start listening to them I usually am afterwards. Incidentally, have you heard the Beth gibbons/Rustin Man album and what did you think if you have?
I agree. Especially listening to one of their albums from beginning to end--it makes me a big weary. They're fine in small doses, though. Ah yeah, great album. Personally, I like it more than Portishead--but it's also best in small doses.
I've always seemed to lean towards what most people consider "depressing" music--- I don't get depressed from it though, I find so much creativity and life behind it, that I just can't become to feel depressed from it. I like music with substance and for some reason the "depressing" music always seems to have much more substance.....
I'm not really a fan of 'uplifting' or 'positive' music. I do, however, like music that has a story to tell and decides that yes I'm going to start at point A and finish at point B (if that makes any sense).
HAHA yeah, I was starting to notice that too Also, I forgot to mention Massive Attack, which is Tricky's other band. Very very good stuff Oh and how could I forget Lamb!!!! You must must MUST check out Lamb if you haven't already. You'll love them.
I bought the live DVD for the bonus Andy Smith mix, the one shot from inside a car going to portishead. Great stuff! I also recommend Red Snapper's album Making Bones... good trip hop
Man, you're 10 years too late. I went through a major obsession with them, too. Actually, believe it or not, after all these years, they're working on another album, possibly coming out late in 2007. They've got most of the instrumentals laid down already, so their partially there. (And no, it's not a hoax, I read it in Mojo who interviewed them.) And if you're really obsessed with Portishead, you can check out the singer's solo album: Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man-Out Of Season. It doesn't sound like her other stuff, but maybe you'd wanna know anyhow Stay away from Morcheeba and Tricky, they suck. If you're looking for good trip-hop, stick with Massive Attack and DJ Shadow
Whoa, Massive Attack is not Tricky's other band, they've just featured him a couple of times earlier in their career. And if you get Lamb, get their first album (Which will be impossible to find.) I bought there second cd when I was sixteen, and it was horrible electronica/pop music
I tried to see Portishead live at Glastonbury festival some years ago, and man I'm tellinya, I have been to Glastonbury festival many times and the time they played they underestimated how many people loved them. I have never seen a band pull a crowd at Glastonbury like they did. The band were due to play, not on the main stage but a smaller venue, and on that night there were maybe 200,000 yes 2 hundred thousand people at Glastonbury (It was in the days when you could sneak in for free if U found a way in) Well they played at a venue where maybe 2000 people could see them but on that night more like 120,000 maybe 150,000 headed toward that tent and they froze the whole of Glastonbury up that night. It took us an hour and a half to walk to the marquis they were playing at (a distance of about 1/2 a mile) from where we started. only to be told the band couldnt get there cuz of the crowds. I believe that for safety reasons they cancelled the gig - but you lot are right - Portishead really are great musicians and composers and I told you this to illustrate just how powerful they once were Why is that?, I tend to find myself thinking this as well. My best thinking is that it may be because it takes a real artist to pull your emotions in a direction that we naturally wouldnt wnt to go. No-one wants to be depressed but some things are depressing to think about. Most pop singers just want to make people feel happy because its easy to do that but real artists can make you feel much more than happy.
