poppies growing in my garden

    in my veggie garden at my house there is about 5 poppy plants growing. i dont know what type they are but do all types of poppies have opium in them? also how do i get the opium from them?

    NO.

    Only opium poppies have opium. Hence the name.

    Papaver Somniferum

    Is what you want.

    based on personal experience (dispite the all the info i''ve read) many non papaver somniferum poppies seem to do the trick although less so than actual somniferum.
    i did read that there was a 2nd wild species which also has a fair amount of morphine in it (i forget the species name but the book was "opium for the masses") any way believe me or not i have extracted the stuff from many types of poppys and have personnally been quite shocked when the "wrong kind" still does the trick.... go figure
    although to contradict myself i don't bother with non somniferum if i have a choice!!

    thats true, i think. i've heard many people say that more than one type of poppy contains opiates, however the strongest concentration (almost the only usable type) would be with Papaver somniferum.
