I'm really really curious about something. Why is it that we always assume the worst of politicians? Now, I realize that as a subspeicies, they are pretty untrustworthy and all... but I mean beyond that... Look at someone like Obama... when he was campaigning, he said all sorts of things that a lot of people liked and voted for him because of... Once he got elected though, instantly, a large portion of his support disappeared as people wanted everything fixed instantly and he didn't... Forget all the common issues though for a minute... The part that really has me wondering right now, is the whole dope thing... Some assume he was just lying and saying anything he had to in order to get elected... Just like pretty much every other candidate before they get elected. There are people who were involved in politics their whole lives, been governors or mayors and so on, and understand how the system works who fight for things and use them to bounce off when they do run... Then, as soon as they win and get in, they change their tunes on things... And we always assume it is because they are just crooked like all the rest... What if there is something else behind it that we don't know about? What if sometime after Obama won (and all other pres and leaders of various countries) but before he took over office, he was granted a crash course into the 'real world'? As in, someone, or a group of someones met with him and said, Grats on winning the pres... now this is the way it works... and if you fight us, we will do "insert scary threat here"... And then proceeded to prove that they were in charge. It would 100% explain why it is that all these politicians say things that change instantly once they win, and sometimes reverse a whole career's worth of opinion. BTW... If I disappear after posting this and this thread disappears too... assume I was right and 'they' have come for me... :willy_nilly:
Honestly that's exactly what happens, politicians get a crash course in political reality. It doesn't always work out in a bad way, for example the about hundred or so tea party backed GOP congressmen if they had their way announced a plan that would essentially cut everything in the federal budget, thankfully though they're going to get a dose of political reality from more seasoned GOP congressmen when it comes time to make the budget, and I bet some of their constituents will be pissed as hell over it. Then there's the conspiracy/vote doesn't count/everything is rigged mindset. This is more of excuse making though. It's easy to say everything is rigged by the powers that be because it absolves someone from having to make any true effort to make a change, become involve, or educate themselves on the reality of political process. Hell you see it on this forum all the time, look at all the people who were against Prop 19 because it wouldn't let them have a field of weed, government will regulate it and load it with additives, a No vote was guaranteed by the new world order or whatever they're not calling it, ect. Completely ignoring the fact even 7-8 years the thought of any state. It's an excuse for laziness to stay home, not donate, and read some guy's blog on how the government was actually behind the yes vote on Prop 19 because it wants marijuana legalized to track every single person who's smoking it. *edit* The point of the second paragraph was too many people believe in the new world order.
its simple. their job is basically lying to us, but they run for election on platforms of honesty. its fucked
i can't for the life of me come to any other conclusion that the only reason why someone would get into politics is because they like telling people what to do. bunch of power hungry savages
Or they like politics and think they're doing something that's going to help a lot of people. Christ that's like saying I can't for the life of me come to any other conclusion on why anyone would want to be a doctor except they love money and having the power of life over people.
I did not mean as in someone gets elected to congress... I was very specific about who and what type of office I was talking about... Obama was a senator when he ran for pres... he was already 'in' with the group you are talking about, and already had those lessons... I am talking about the leaders of countries... not as the leadership of countries. Think about it... if you were part of a group of a dozen people (or other entity), that were intent on maintaining the same control you (or predecessors) had for the past few thousand years would you be in any way shape or form, in the public life as such? Take your pick of conspiracies for this one.... Aliens that teleport the newly elected leader across the universe, demonstrate their ability to kill or control, threaten their children, maybe even brain wash or mind control them... or hell even replace them with a clone... How would we know? We wouldn't... but it sure would explain the about face that every president does on certain issues... Maybe weed is poison to the aliens for example... As for the rest.... If you mean the "New World Order" as in a special group (besides the old wrestling team), then I really have no clue who you are talking about... I see that dropped a lot on forums.... fear the new world order... theres people who want a new world order... oh noess.. its the new world order.... I guess I'm just a simple person, because I look around and I see the current world order and I can't think of anything better then having a new one... What is expected to be different if there is one government world wide controlling and exploiting us as opposed to the currently hundreds of governments? They wouldn't have the excuse to kill off as many people in the name of nationalism.... There would be the games of this or that country is going to go on a rampage... Things like Universal Human Rights would actually mean something...
That was at the heart of what I meant... There are good people who get into politics for good reasons... AND they work for good purposes... and some of them even do make it all the way to the top. And then they stop being the person they were... The general assumption is that they lied to us all along... When perhaps there is another explanation.
sounds like you heard what michael ignatieff said on cbc this week.. Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff Should Make Marijuana Policy a Priority
I'll go read that now, but no I hadn't... If harper gets back in again, it will be because of that fucking guy... I don't know what the fuck is wrong with the liberals thinking he is a good choice... well beyond what is always wrong with them... I should point out that I think he would be better for most canadians then harper could even dream of being... but that isnt saying a whole lot... If there are aliens really in control, I hope they choke on them both.... edited to add; Yeah, that (reading that article) did nothing to change my opinion about the putz...
I think it all goes back to political reality. Politicians need to talk big on the campaign trail, and that can be blamed on the voters. People aren't going to vote for someone who gives them realistic expectations as odd as it seems. When you get to the top, such as the house or senate, I think it's just more of being jaded. Despite how it seems being a congressman is in fact hard, it takes a lot of work to keep something as large as the federal government of any nation up and running, especially one this large. It doesn't really help when people on the national news are calling you a nazi or communist every night at 6pm. Then there's also all power being corrupting combined with apathy. Thanks to both gerrymandering and location, a lot of house and senate seats are essentially safe for the person holding them. You've been in office for 15 years and face no real chance of losing an election I think we'd all fall victim to general malaise, especially once you realize you've had to become part of the system you use to hate. By system I mean the true dealings that have to be done to get any bill passed through a legislative body anywhere in the world, the constant attacks on you from the news, the shady dealings you see other people in your government doing, and most importantly seeing things that you think any sane person would support in terms of helping people being stalled or getting the axe to them. I think it goes for any job where people go in with a lot of expectations than just become more jaded as time goes on and the job just eventually becomes a way to pay the bills like any other job. Politicians just happen to be public officials. I think it was Bismark who once said a legislative bill is like a sausage, even if it's good in the end it's best not to see how it's made.
I don't trust politicians for the simple reason that most of them take campaign contributions from corporations, thus ensuring that they will fight not for the people but for the corporation. I do agree that some politicians do not intend to lie while they are campaigning. Once a politician assumes office they aren't written a blank check to enact every policy they campaigned for. Obama is a great example of this. Once he got into office he had a hard fight to get any of his policies pushed through, and the ones that did pass, such as the healthcare bill, was such a watered down mess after every member of Congress put their own two cents in that it doesn't even resemble what he originally intended.
