Some time ago my house was broken into and some things stolen.I have since found out who it was, I have told the police but they won't take any action.
Would it be wrong of me to one day in the very early hours of the morning to break in to that person's house and retreive my stolen goods?

I would say that you should break in and move all of your stuff around and put it in obscure places until they figured it was haunted and gave it back :p

Make a lot of noise about it. Call the press. Do something. We have a couple places around here where they stick up pictures of people who are theives (or just generally horrible- beat people up etc) who the police won't take action on, with warnings and basically telling us to spit on them in the street, etc.

We had a funny story a little while back, police in NZ are idiots sometimes, a guy rang them and said there was a burglar in his garage could they hurry up and come, he'd locked the guy in..they said it was nonurgent and basically he'd wait a while..half an hour later he got pissed off, the guy was breaking stuff and everything, so he rang the cops and said not to hurry about his burglary, he'd just shot the guy in the head so he wouldnt go anywhere. Within 5 minutes like 3 cars pulled up and he was just sitting on his fence saying "you were busy, but all of a sudden three are available?" Man he got in trouble, but his burglar was arrested and charged! yay!

Like Disarm said, don't do it. Pester the police and the press to get the story some attention, but don't do anything illegal. Yes, it is your stuff, BUT breaking and entering is still illegal and won't help you out when the police finally do get involved.

By the way, that's a great story, Disarm. Fuckin cops...

There was this man who had his firewood stolen on a regular basis. So one day he took a fairly small log, split it open , hollowed the inside out, placed a stick of dynamite inside and glued the log back together.
Kangeroo courts are still alive. When the authorities are involved, they try to hush things up and such incidents are never documented in the local paper.
Maybe if I got hold of a photo of the thief a could print up a small poster on my PC saying,

Meet one of the fastest people in the removals business.

Yeah just keep annoying the police, that usually works. Too bad it isn't an eye for an eye, otherwise I'd tell you to break in, steal your stuff back, and cut off his hands. Super

There's all these really tiny digital camera's nowadays... could you get close and take a picture of your stuff in their house? Or maybe have a friend to it (I suppose for you to be sure who did it, you'll have to know these people or have mutual friends???) But don't break & enter, they'll just get you for that...

it would be unethical, mainly because of the deception involved, now if you and freinds , family, went there when he was home and demanded it back you would be in the clear

there are no grey areas to ethics, only justifications and two wrongs simply do not make a right. we cannot always be ethical but we can always know the diference

sorry for not aknowledgeing your point, there is truth in what you say, and im not realy that dense. kharma being what it is you can guess what happened i have to say in my own dfence that i have spent the last 7 weeks of a convalesence here at the library studying philosiphers and it had me thinking too literaly.
it could also be argued that some things in life the fine points of ethics have no place and we can only keep in mind the greater good
i guess what im trying to say is that hen it comes right down to it ethics is just a word and for all the words they use to explain the words they use it is all being said just as well by the museings of young poets

the police won't help. they don't bother with criminals that could be dangerous when there are drunk kids they could be making money off of. breaking into the guy's house could be risky, but it's the only way i see you getting your stuff back

ahh vigilantiasm... a just idea absoulutely.
But jail sucks, and a BnE charge isn't easy to beat
The one thing of learned in life is that information for the public fixes everything
because the cops don't actually want people to know. In my town we got beat up by the cops all the time for anything and everything but no one files complaints. So we started calling the press and shared stories. An internal investigation was started, and though it won't change things promptly information for the public is always a start
call the press... in my town they do stories of innocent people getting screwed all the time.

    And Good luck.

ps - i'm not opposed to vigilantism but i am opposed to jail :p

This is what I was going to say. Take it into your own hands. It's the law.
