I was wondering if anyone here knows anything about the mythological, spiritual, ritualistic or customarial (think I just made up a word..) thoughts or ideas about poi from traditional Maori culture..? Kind of a big question.. sorry : ) Thanks! ~Megan
lol, plain poi certainly are...I don't know where the lighting on fire thing came from though, sorry.
Nope. I think the poi is either a weapon that was used by women OR I think it was used also by maori warriors back in the days, to strengthen up their wrists making their Patu handling alot stronger and quicker, when preparing for battle. Growing up around a Kapa Haka group for half of your life, you kinda learn these things. Take care.
I looked around, and the best I could find was on maori.org.nz, and it pretty much says exactly what 8footsativa_chik says above.
I always wondered where maoris got their plastic bags to make them with before settlers came :& I've never seen a poi made with anything else..
I think bak in the dayz, they were made with flax, and they were pretty heavy too, they needed to have some weight in them to build wrist flexibilty and be able to knock a few heads off lol.
