I was wondering, have you ever attended (or maybe even organized) a poetry slam? Care to share your thoughts and experiences? For those who are not familiar with the idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poetry_slam
I love poetry slams as an art form. There is one held here once a month and I've been trying to work up the courage to participate.
Yeah, that's the reason I'm asking in the first place. Me and my friends are kind of bored for the last couple of months. So I was looking for a new "hobby". I used to watch a lot of scifi series and to play a lot of video games, but there's nothing special on TV this season and the RPG genre in VG is not what is used to be. So back to the topic - I've came across this article: http://jaybanks.ca/blogroll/2012/11/11/vancouver-poetry-slam/ It got me intrigued so I googled up this: http://www.vancouverpoetryhouse.com/ ...and since then I've been thinking about it. It looks like a lot of fun. So, that's why I created this thread: to get some "hints" and yeah, as you said Meliai, to work up some courage too. So, if anyone has ever taken the stage at poetry slam, I would love to hear the story and any advices I am even thinking about exercising by making a recital in front of my friends.
Not really much to say about being on stage. Grab some nads and do it! Most slam's will also have an open mic, so if you're intimidated about being scored (though the points aren't the point) that can be a good way to gain confidence. Audiences love n00bs and usually treat them well, even if they are awful. If there are any workshops offered (We do a workshop the day after our slams), go to them and learn. There are a lot of angles at which to approach slam: the poetry, the performance can all be taken in a wide variety of directions. I guess my only real hint is: Watch everything you can find. Write, write, write, whether you're feeling it or not - writing prompts and journaling to get your skills up. Though I gotta say...for a person who has feelings about the 'hipster' crowd, this seems like an odd choice for a new hobby. :hide:
Well it depends on specific people of course. I try to take it easy, with humour, maybe a bit strong humour, but still, I hate when people are overacting too much. Anyway, I still want to try out, so thanks for the tips!
