This is becoming more common. I'm seeing offers to teens such as free concert or amusement park tickets if they pledge to not text while driving. .
Here's an example: http://www.southcoasttoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100514/NEWS/5140326 "Funds raised by the campaign will go toward the school's after-prom party, said Dean of Students Carrie Cetenich. The party is held in hopes of deterring students from another dangerous combination: driving and drinking. While Thursday's assembly reached about a quarter of the 535-member class of 2010, Assistant Headmaster Andrew Kulak said assemblies will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for the remainder of the class. As part of their pledge to refrain from texting and driving, the students also signed their names; they will be entered into a raffle to win two Red Sox tickets." .
If that works as an incentive, then I am all for it. Any idiot who feels that their need to answer a text is so important while driving a car, needs to be smacked with the device until it sinks in that it is dangerous. It is illegal here to even use a cell now unless it is hands free but it does not stop people from doing it.
seems like typical American response to a problem, try and convince people to make a moral pledge for material things. I don't see it working Agreed, it is quite dangerous.
If they want these teenagers to grow up and act more responsibly, why the hell play down their age and offer them amusement park tickets!?? A good old fashioned driving ban and fine would suffice, does the job for a good majority of drivers now too afraid to talk on the phone, and those who decide not to drink before entering a vehicle.
I don't drive and I don't own a phone. I see people going through all kinds of contortions over their phones, regardless if they are driving or not. An, in person conversation, is often interrupted by a remote request.
I don't drive or own a cell phone either, but if they gave me free amusement park tickets, I'd still pledge not to That's not cheating, is it?
I hate texting... I especially hate when people drive and do it... I only use my phone as a PHONE. :coffee:
