There are hundreds upon thousands of women in african countries sucessfully breastfeeding their newborn infants. Nestle company owns at least two major baby formula companies and makes regular trips to these countries. They "kindly" give samples for when Moms are tired so another family member can feed the infant. And so it goes, and so it goes. Until the milk dries up and the mothers are dependant upon expensive formulas to feed their babies. If u care: don't buy Nestle! An old OB Nurse/HippyMama
I thought this was over years ago, but I was wrong. This is pure evil. Below are Nestle brands-there are a lot of them! wow I didn't know it was possible for major brands to look any worse in my eyes. I have no children as of yet but I do have a niece and if this was done to her family i would be so mad so I too am boycotting nestle. thank you for the information.
that seems more like the african mothers fault to me. but i also don't buy any of those products, so im in the boycott by default.
Not to mention that the water often used to mix the formula has a slew of bacteria/viruses. Instead of supplying these mothers formula they should be supplying them with manual breast pumps for the times that they leave their infants.
As far as baby products are concerned, why not make it a point to make your own baby food? Buying local produce (emphasize local, or literally grow your own garden if you can) and just puree your own food and jar it for the week. Avoid buying big name brands all together. As far as other foods are concerned, whether they come from Nestle or other brands, most companies will rely on where they can get their products for the lowest cost and highest profit. This is how big industry works. By all means, boycott. But, try to find time to make your own foods, buy as local as you possibly can, and stop relying on the prepackaged food industry as a whole.
So you are boycotting a company that gives free samples to poor people. You must be a fucking rocket scientist. What do you expect, for them to give unlimited amounts to these people? A buisness can only give when it is in buisness, so they have to make money to give. So pat yourself on the back for boycotting Charitable actions. Hey at least you are protesting right? it doesent matter if it makes sense, or if it is actually a bad thing, you just have to protest, grow the fuck up.
Charitable actions? To deny babies their own mothers milk? Offers samples of substandard "milk" that last just long enough for their mothers milk to dry up then disappear? BREASTFEEDING should be encouraged. Babies are dying because of what Nestle is doing. Making $ at the expense of the lives of god knows how many infants = evil. Period. You grow the fuck up.
This isn't the only reason to boycott Nestle. They're also own many small US water bottling companies, where they pay almost nothing to pump the water, put it in plastic bottles and sell it to other states/countries. They often get tax breaks from the state, get property tax breaks, destroy the roads with their trucks, and lower the water table. Nestle is an unscrupulous corporation. They told the state of Maine (while being sued by the town of Fryeburg) that their right to make a profit superseded the rights of the town to own the water.
Bullshit! Those people are lucky o have formula. This is one of the dumest things I have heard. Sounds like they are doing a good thing?
what gets me about this all, is there is great poverty in africa no?! when the mother isnt properly nourished a breast fed baby isnt either, in some if not all of those cases the kids with formula are better off...babies aren't dying because of formula, they are dying from a lack of nutrients in breast milk from mothers who can barely if at all afford a healthy diet for themselves. instead of protesting a product why not rally people/funds/supplies to help these mothers so they can have a healthy diet and provide healthy breastmilk for their babies and as a result don't have to use formula?
Finally, someone is speaking sense here. There is a fund named the Combined Federal Campaign which is used for employees of the (U.S.) federal government to make payroll donations to charities. I mention this because it has an enormous database of charities within it and (I think) there are certain requirements that must be met for a charity to be put on the list. Also, the listings for thse charities include the percentage of a charities revenues that are spent on over head and thus never make it to those who need it most. That is a crucial factor when choosing a charity: how much of your money will do real work for the needy. This link will take anyone to the CFC database search site: CFC Search The above link will allow anyone to search by charity name, keyword, etc. Note: The link is for the Miami Valley area but in this case it does not matter because this particular search is for charities working outside the U.S in Africa. Entering "africa" into the CFC search will take one to the following webpage: africa This page has no local charities listed (because the keyword search was africa...) but has a host of international charities. Take your pick and spend some (I think you should spend all and then some...) of that money you will save by boycotting Nestle. I personally give out of every paycheck to the following: Name: Action Africa, Inc. Number: (202)529-8350 Website Address: www.actionafrica.org EIN: 522233698 Percentage: 13.9 Description: Supporting rural villages in Nigeria and Sierra Leone by surrounding children with care, learning, and training; free medial clinics for families; micro-loans for entrepreneurial women. NTEE Code(s)*: B,E,S Name: East African Center for the Empowerment of Women and Children Number: (703)845-0208 Website Address: www.eastafricancenter.org EIN: 912161222 Percentage: 18.0 Description: Helping women and children living in extreme poverty in rural Kenya to help themselves through high-impact, cost-effective health and education programs and small-business development. NTEE Code(s)*: B,E,S Ideally it would be best to find even lower overhead percentages but I chose these because of the specific work they do. There are an enormous number of charities that do great work. The link I provided should give anyone a good start at finding one or more. I will also suggest that if you think you do not have money to spare you are mistaken and have no appreciation of the difference between "wants" and "needs".
things like that are helpful grayraven! thanks for providing that link. the fact of the matter is, when making a thread like this it is very important to give facts/links/actual information instead of just making outlandish claims without anything to substantiate them. most people reading this (with half a brain) are more likely to want to help when there is viable information. do you really think boycotting nestle is going to make an impact in africa?? no!! do you think taking affirmative action to help correct the problem would be more productive? most likely. it saddens me that so many people just believed what was posted, didnt question it, didnt even consider checking the facts themselves... thinking like that only contributes to the issues in our world.
I believe that a lot of the infants were dying as a direct result of mixing formula with dirty water. Breastmilk comes from the mother and does not require any sort of sterilization. Dirty water will hurt the mother less than an infant. Offering formula as a supplement is not doing anyone a favour unless they are teaching them how to correctly use the formula and providing clean water for its consumption. If ppl want to boycott and they feel better ethically for it, then that is their prerogative. Some ppl may not have money to spend to donate, but they can certainly withhold who they give their money to.
