i found a butterfly with broken wings. aparently the top part is alright but the bottom part is missing... can i help her in any way? i don't know anything about butterflies. if i leave her where she was she will surelly get steped on cause she cant fly and this is a busy area. please help
What I usually do is put flowers, over ripe fruit and sugar water...in a small dish or soaked sponge...in a glass or plastic container, doesn't have to be too large, and I cover it with a fine mesh. These containers do sometimes have their own covers. Gives the butterfly a chance, but minus wings I'm afraid she won't last too long. Good luck!
thanx for the support. i'm happy to say that Viento Fuerte (Strong Wind) -yes, i named her- is doing well... she cannot fly so i have her in a jar with come leaves. i put little pieces of a slimy banana, since i read they like fermented fruit. today as soon as i get out of work i plan on going to buy some flower and some mesh. i'm going to make her a nice comfy habitat.... well at least as best as i can. every one i told just said it was silly cause if she cant fly then theres not much i can do, and to let her die somewere. great advice i know she might not last long but that doesnt mean i should let her get steped on.
You have such a beautiful spirit, your gentle soul shines through youyr posts! It is not often that someone would care as much as you do about a 'bug'. In my expirience the best thing you can do is keep her comfortable ... the bannana is a great idea ... but also put a small dish of sugar water in there. They love it! I'm going to see if I can find a recipe ... She has a pretty good chance ... A few years ago I found a butterfly with a broken wing in the middle of the road and kept her inside for a little over a month. Then one day I took her outside like I usually did - just to get some sun - and she flew away! Right over the horizon. It was a beautiful ... but needless to say I cried my eyes out. Best wishes to you and Viento Fuerte!
Here is a great link to a butterfly nectar recipie! http://birdcam.backyardwildlife.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=19
I hope it doesn't die in captivity, though. That would suck. Better to be eaten by a bird free, then die a prisoner in a glass jar.
That's so COOL how much you care for another living thing so much!! I wish every person was like that. I hope Viento Fuerte makes a complete and full recovery (and I'm sure she will) Peace
Wouldn't it be awesome if everyone could care for other people as much as you do butterflies? How much better would the world be then? I think that is awesome what you're doing! Butterflies do not live very long after their matamorphises (spelling) do they? It is wonderful you are making it's last few days special. I also think the name you gave it is awesome! So butterflies like fermented fruit? Interesting. So if the butterflie wing is hurting it in any way, at least the fermented fruit will dull the pain? But if it is staggering, you need to give it some coffee and let it sober up. (probably not the best idea, on second thought... Don't know how a butterfly would take to caffeine...)
i'm happy to say that Viento Fuerte is doing well. My huby and i have created a nice spacious habitat for her. she has her sugar water and some fruit. i also put some leaves. i had to place her in the bathroom cause my curious cats already saw her and went nuts. so while i'm no at home VF stays in the bathroom. i want to buy some flowers but the place i went to, they didnt know which flower atract butterflies so i didn't buy any yet. i took some pics... i'll post them as soon as i upload them
alright....that is most excellent that VF is still surviving. did you know butterflies taste with their feet? just a random thought what does the butterfly look like? its so wonderful to see you care so much....taking care of her is taking care of you. its a beautiful cycle
thats so awesome, i love how much you care keep us updated with how Viento Fuerte is doing ! i hope she makes it
Once I found a flea with a broken leg.....euthanasia was the best i could do to help.....anyway i suggest you send the butterfly in a small box, via airmail, to China....even dying on the way, no other butterfly will ever had such a long flight...
