Maybe the best Psychadelic-Rock Band, but as far as 'Progressive' goes...the mighty Led Zeppelin take the cake
Well, c'mon; it's not like I'm being an asshole about it and nitpicking here. According to (as far as I know) every definition of progressive rock, Led Zeppelin doesn't fit. A bluesy rock 'n' roll band just doesn't fit into a genre of music based heavily on jazz and classical music. It's no big thing; Zeppelin just isn't progressive no matter how you look at it. I actually don't see why people (at least people here at the Hip Forums) get so up-tight when people talk about genres. There's nothing wrong with placing music in broad categories. Sure, debates are had as to where certain bands and albums should be placed, but really, genres help more than they hurt. Genres make it much easier to talk about music. Instead of explaining every aspect of a given artist or album, you can save a ton of time by simply giving its genre.
Why do you call EVERYTHING prog-rock? Just because it has a few arty elements doesn't mean it's 'progressive rock'.. using your definition I could call everything from Television to Mercury Rev 'prog rock.'
Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall were all prog too, along with quite a bit of their other stuff.
thing is with music genres is that some intervean, for example i'd say psycadelic and progressive can be simular and get confused with each other
that is absolutely wrong. pink floyd fits more "art rock" than prog. does pink floyd sing about geeky stuff like spaceflight and aliens and stuff? no. and if you want to freekin label pink floyd, it would probably fit more of an avante-garde genre, well especially the early stuff.
there is also a thing called a "progressive can of whoop ass", which Im about to open in one minute, so would you please shut up about progressive rock for one minute. one album does not make a band progressive. period.
