i am flying soon and i really would like to avoid any problems going through airport security. i have a good amount of piercings and i was wondering how likely it is that they will set off the metal detector. i could just take them all out but it would be a major pain in the ass, especially since at least one of them will have to be professionally removed, not to mention i would feel naked without them. i suppose if i beep i coul just show the jewelry but 3 of them are genital piercings and i'd like to avoid having to get personally searched. its probably not enough metal to set them off but i dont know. has anyone had a problem with this or am i just being silly?

i've never had a problem, but i suppose it's POSSIBLE. especially if you use titanium or surgical steel in your piercings, it shouldn't be an isssue, since that's what they use to implant in people when they do surgeries and such.

It all depends on how much metal there is. Unless you have some HUGE barbell or plug, I would be shocked if they set off the alarm, however, it is possible. To put it in perspective, i have a large belt buckle that only sometimes sets them off.

I would just go through the detectors and have them wand search you if you do set it off. If they are more persistent, simply explain the situation, ask for a female inspector and a private room. Its your right not to be searched in the middle of the airport. Really, though, they deal with it all the time.

my father had one hell of a time with metal detectors. everytime he passed through one it would go off. his problem was not body piercings but, scraple he had it through out his body. he got it on a country road in france in, a stoped jeep waiting on a cow that was crossing the road; next thing he knew... he was covered in bits and peices of cow and the driver of the jeep had lost a good part of his upper body; my dad was bleeding too. poor old bossy had step on a land mine! this all happen during world war 2. i don't know about body piercings setting a metal detector off but, i know scraple will do it every time.

from what I hear, the surgical steel used for body jewelry does NOT set off the detectors. But I have no experience with this, so, I don't know.
