Photobucket-Virus Alert Question!!!

Discussion in 'Random Thoughts' started by AmericanTerrorist, Jul 14, 2013.

  1. So, if I was just on photobucket and all the sudden I go back to that page and instead of the photobucket stuff there is an alert there on the main page (like, not a pop up) telling me that "Microsoft found a critical virus- some Trojan- on my computer and I need to click 'clean up' there to fix it".... um, I was correct in not clicking it right....?

Just to me seems like that probably WAS a potential virus trying to get me to download it?

Hmm.. too bad you didn't get a screen capture. What AV do you use?

A site like Photobucket shouldn't have viruses.

  4. Yeah, I wish I woulda screen captured it but I was like "I need to click OFF this page".... are you asking me what antivirus thing I use? Uhhh the bad thing is the free Norton I had just expired so as of yesterday ...so, none. lol. Bad girl, I know...

But since there is no antivirus thing on there... then... what in the world coulda been telling me I had a virus other than... a virus?

(what's a good free thing I can download to scan this comp.?)

    AVG is good.

AVG is good, and I recommend Malwarebytes as well.

  7. Okay, yea, I'll run both of them tonight. Thanks...

Yea I'm convinced now that that was a virus that if I would have clicked on it then the comp. would have the virus. Cause w.out antivirus software nothing good is gonna tell me I have a virus and "click here to clean it up"... and this computer is running fine... not slow... no pop ups..
but yea, I should take care of getting that (back) on here now before something does happen....

I have Avast and no complaints. Also, try Imgur for your pictures, not near as much javascript through that site.

I haven't used Antivirus software for over a decade. My method is not for everyone, but i'm gonna recommend it anyways

I keep all the information that shall never be lost on a separate hard drive. such as family photos, music and movies that I'll never be able to find again, etc.. A newer and safer option may be the cloud, but I haven't graduated there yet. If anything happens to the OS I can just fresh install with no worries, except someone keylogging my bank stuff, but my network is pretty secure.. my storage drive isnt even in my computer right now because I don't want to wear it out, or even cook it, because my desktop can literally heat the room. It's an old celeron D machine.

An antivirus won't affect that. And yes, that was malware trying to get you to install it. It's cross site scripting, they are able to serve you code because of improperly written applications or code courtesy of their advertisers or because of the way you interpret java, flash or another active content.

Delete the old version of java, then update to the new version.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/uninstallapplet.jsp

You should update everything, but browser is number one. Once you've update to newest version of firefox, get this.

    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/quickjava/?src=cb-dl-mostpopular

Turn active content on only when you need it. A pretty easy solution is to have one browser like firefox locked down from active content for general browsing, and chrome with less restrictions on active content (java and flash) for media sites like youtube.

Antivirus software is only good for catching last generations malware. They all use the same definitions when a new virus is discovered, so which one you use isn't very important.http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

You shouldn't use speed or lack of popups as a guide. A lot of what's out now is developed by gangs, is professionally written and is designed to be imperceptible.

    That's a good idea :2thumbsup:

I have 2 computers, 1 secured to the hilt with all of my family pictures, music, and movies, and the other for porn which so infected with every malware and virus around it could start a worldwide pandemic

i don't use an anti-virus program either. if i notice things running slow i'll download avg and run a check, but i haven't actually found anything in years. i run a malware/spyware check every couple of months though, and usually it just deletes a few tracking cookies. i also don't download porn, i just use the big streaming sites.

streamed porn is so low quality anyways. I Just use The Piratebay for video content, and I only follow imgur links or similar for pics.

xtube redporn wtf ever are so outdated.

If you don't want to go through the trouble of two computers, just run a hypervisor. That way you can have dozens of virtual machines. A locked down one for banking, a versatile one for web browsing, an open one for watching youtube, and one for your dirty laundry.

Look at me, I'm running windows xp!
