Has anyone ever tried one of these? It's the hottest curry available in Indian restaurants, even hotter than the Vindaloo. Some restaurants display health warnings next to them. Well, I wouldn't want to waste my money on buying one and dying, so I decided to make one today. Found a recipe on the internet, which included 14, yep, fourteen red birds eye chillies for one portion. Why would I do such a thing I hear you cry? Well, why did Mallory climb Everest? Because it's there! Perhaps a slightly ominious example, considering he never made it back down alive. Nevertheless, I ate the curry with rice and naan and plentiful quantities of milk to take away the burn. It was pretty damn hot, but actually surprisingly nice after all that. Try it out for yourself, I highly recommend it.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phall
hm my mate paul ALWAYS usedta get phall and he'd sit there and sweat at every group balti social. im sure it was a macho thing but he always said it was just coz he liked it. i swear you get a teensy bit on your tongue and its like its on fire! mental food mental food
Oh it's definitely a macho thing. I once ordered a vindaloo in a restaurant just because I had to see if I could do it. Imagine my horror when I found out there was a hotter curry out there, and that ordering a vindaloo had proved nothing! I doubt our Phall was as hot as some of the ones you can get in restaurants. Ideally we should have used 12 scotch bonnets instead of 14 birds eyes, so I might have to try this one again....
ah you needta go to a proper balti house if you want a proper faal. trip to bradford/birmingham? or go to brick lane next time ur in london hehe
Oh the best curry house in the world is the Kohinoor in Cambridge. But as I said, I wouldn't pay for a phall. I'd like to enjoy my curry iof I'm going out. Having said that, the one I cooked was bloody nice. Only ate a third of it, shared it between three people. It was an experiment. With milk to take away the burn afterwards, it's actually got quite a lot of flavour....
