ermms this might sound extreme but oh well it was in my head... I feel that people today use the word "pet" as too much of a material possession, their selling animals like slaves for money!! Their living beings to and they have feelings.. I dont get it =o( my pet is my friend not my material possession... and nine times out of ten today people treat their pets very cruely... its soo sad.. ermms....I read a random thread about "what to considered when purchasing a pet" its like hey do you think the animal looks at you and says "ermms wonder what that human comes with.. I'll think I'll take that one..." do you get what Im saying I'd like feedback and constructive criticism please dont be mean !

    I sooo hear you.
First I dont believe in buying a pet.
I see people spening retarted amounts of money on pure breed pets...
And the ones on the shelters (which there is nothing wrong with them) die on a regular basis because they are not adopted.
I used to volunteer at the ASPCA in Manhattan, NY and I learned sooo much...and yes I learned to hate those "humans" that abused their "animals"

My Angus is my friend, I can soo tell how he fells by looking at him into his eyes...and he knows whem I'm not at my best and he stays by me.

    I love my Angus Young!

I agree. I've seen people who buy animals for their amusment.....like a hamster and then they stick him a little tank and take him out to play when they want to be entertained. Unfortunatley there are alot of people like that but then there are also alot of people who aren't (the folks on this board seem pretty awesome caregivers). I don't agree with pet shops and I wish everyone would support their local shelter...... animals have been domesticated -that's the way it is- and so now we have a duty to be of service to them and take care of them. My animals have a great life.....they are my family. And there are alot of others people who treat their animals with the same respect and love. Unfortunatley it's not AS common as it should be and society in general has a pretty warped view of "pets".

Totally agree with Fer & Elle :)

My rabbits are not pets. They are companion animals.
I don't own them, in the way my parents don't own me.

Always had issues with the word pet, it is utterly patronising. Just some daft insignificant little thing you can play with.

I know most people who use those terms actually mean well, but it gives the wrong impression.

Haven't bought my cat. Got him from a loving home for free. And I don't think I own him, no more than a parent owns a child.

I love animals, we just got another abused horse today and she's pregnant but she's so malnourished we have to have a vet come out tomorrow and deliver the baby wether it's time or not or else the mother horse will die thus causing both of them to die.. I just hope that the foal is far along enough that we can nurse it.... Im scared...

I own my dog, I love her and she loves me. I care for her and she repays me with loyality and affection. But when the time comes for a legislator to tell me I cannot own this kind of dog you better bet that my constitutional rights are better served by owning my pet and not just being her friend. This may not be what some of you mean by own but it is a dangerous thing to take away the ownership in a society that governs and understands ownership and would just take advantage of your "friend". I own a pit bull and there are many communiyies across our land that are taking away our right to own such a misunderstood beast that needs protecting not anillation.

I love people who love animals. *LOVE*

Ghandi said that the true measure of a society is in the way it treats its animals. I am so ashamed to be a member of this one.

i agree totally. but people are so self-centered and materialistic, that everything has to be about owning and domination. but my 4 cats seem to "own" me (they take over my bed, demand attention...you know how cats are =) i just believe that i am here to take care of animals. one life is no greater than the other..animal or man. thats also why i dont eat animals, either!!

I dislike the idea of "owning" an animal. Guarding and caring for one, sure. But I don't think you can "own" an animal any more than you can own a child or other human being. Your parents don't "own" you. How come you "own" your pets?

We live in an animal owning society. Until Bush signs the animals emancipation proclamation, I am master.

Please inform my parents that they don't own me, they'd be interested to hear. :p

My puppy is my best friend, but I think people get too hung up on the wording. I "own" my dog in the way that I own my clarinet- both are my babies and I care for both of them (in different ways of course), but essentially they are MINE under my care. It's just a way of expressing the fact that I have responsibility over them. Don't get so hung up on the words, it really doesn't matter as long as you treat whatever animal you have like a member of the family. People still beat their kids, even if they are just their guardians and not "owning" them.

Just to say it, I have 8 parrots. They are my friends, not my pets. In fact, they're more than that. I treat them like my children. If you've ever dealt with parrots (especially the larger ones), they really are like taking care of little children. They need constant love and attention. I don't "own" them. if anything, they "own" me :)

I wish I could have a large aviary, outdoors. But my location and climate would not allow for that. However, I do not feel guilty for keeping them in my home. This is something people simply cannot understand until they have had birds themselves. It is no more wrong than keeping dogs and cats and fish and hamsters in your home. of course, it all comes down to how you treat them.

Birds are very social animals (at least parrots) and become very strongly bonded with their chosen companions. Whether that companion is human or another bird means little to them. As long as they are allowed to be birds (which means letting them fly and socialize), then all is good.
