These guys are on top of the scene at the moment with the whole "Djent" movement flowing through the metal world. When I first heard them I was blown away... Then the vocals came in... I'm definitely not a fan of the "whiney" vocal style they use... I was hoping they had atleast one instrumental version of their songs... Luckily their whole first album is available instrumentally, which is awesome. Periphery are the only band that use the "Djent" style that I can really respect, the musicianship is definitely there. I get told by random people to listen to: Veil Of Maya, Born Of Osiris, and other Deathcore bands that only slightly use the "Djent" style... Those bands are definitely not my cup of tea. I'm more of a Death/Black/Thrash kind of person. In all honesty I don't like the way the word "Djent" is being used, it's been taken way out of context and people are acting as if it is it's own genre... Where in reality "Djent" is really just the way a certain riff sounds. Periphery use a lot of "Djent" riffs, but they also use a lot of Prog/Technical sounding riffs in their music. Also, after watching interviews with the band members I can tell that they aren't the typical dumb new-age metal head who has forgotten about everything before Deathcore came out. Check out this song "Icarus Lives". I can definitely see why this is one of their bigger songs. Heavily Meshuggah influenced, that's for sure. When the song kicks in it's groovy as hell. The riff at 1:02 sounds exactly like something Meshuggah would write... But I'm not complaining... Hell, most of the stuff I write sounds like a complete Chuck Schuldiner rip off (to a certain degree). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqnCNMHSArg"]Periphery - Icarus Lives! [Instrumental] - YouTube I'm very tempted to write a "Djent" influenced song... It would have to be written over a long period of time though, I'm definitely not into the "00-0-1-00-1-00" kind of playing. I know it sounds cool, but it's been massively overused by literally thousands of bands... I wouldn't even waste my time with something like that. Anyway, these guys are definitely worth checking out (instrumentally). They definitely stick out on my playlist (espcially since they are alphabetically placed beside Pathology, Pantera, and Powergrlove). Regardless, I think they've pushed the whole "Djent" sound to a new level. I'm excited to hear Meshuggah's new album, I'm pretty sure once it's released all of these "Djent" bands will be going back to the drawing board (including Periphery).
I dunno, man. Have you heard Animals as Leaders or After the Burial? Animals is Instrumental Djent, and After the Burial are heavy as fuck. They are pushing the scene, making it heavier than Periphery ever could. Periphery used to have a heavier singer, but then he was dropped, and the new guy made his stuff the only stuff out there. I love the growlier stuff too, which Djent bands like TesseracT and Circles don't quite have, but some of it can have huge riffs and be amazingly catchy as well as technical. In terms of the genre, it may not be just because its more the tone and tuning that make the sound, but in the end, thats what genre's are, what the sound is. So I think it does count. Fuckin can't wait for Meshuggah's new stuff. Will be probably seeing it in March at Soundwave in Australia.
They're alright...Misha's pretty sick but in my humble opinion (keep in mind I'm a drummer, not a guitar player) I think Tosin Abasi (animals as leaders) is better. But I'm also a little bias towards animals as leaders just because I like their drummers style alot. And yea....Meshuggah is pretty brutal
I completely forgot about AAL when I posted this thread, Tosin Abasi is ridiculous. I just wish they were heavier.
