This is the sequel to the 2010 movie that started this franchise based on the books by Rick Riordan.

For those not familiar, the movie opens with a monologue about how the Immortals of Greek Mythology are true and they did have offspring with mortals, known as Demigods or half-bloods. Percy Jackson's (Logan Lerman) dad is Poseidon and he then is Perseus and the first movie showed how he can manipulate water.

As a religious minority in the U.S. I like the caption on this poster

In this movie, Percy is just biding his time in Camp Half Blood, which is protected by a barrier emanating from a special tree that Zeus put in place. His friends from the last movie, Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) are there as well. Additionally, it seems Poseidon was one active procreator and Percy discovers he has a half-brother, Tyson (Douglas Smith) who is a Cyclops.

To get the special effects story going, the protective barrier is broken by a large, fire breathing mechanical bull that wreaks havoc on Camp Half Blood. It is finally destroyed but the tree that made the barrier is dying.

So a quest is formed by our four champions and another Demigod, Clarisse (Leven Rambin) daughter of Ares and a capable but aggressive warrior with inferiority issues that make her an overachiever. They are to find the Golden Fleece, which can bring life back to the dead or dying.

On their quest, which goes thru the Bermuda Triangle or Sea of Monsters, they are swallowed by an ocean vortex into the monster but manage to get out on a civil war era ship manned by zombies.

This movie like the last, has all these bizarre mythological occurrences on this quest, including fighting a large Cyclops that guards the fleece and likes to eat satyrs or demigods who come looking for it. But of course they manage to get the fleece but are betrayed by a Demigod who wants to bring down Olympus by reviving Kronos. (Go read your Greek Mythology if you don't know who all these characters are)

You know Kronos can't be revived because he would also destroy the world, so there are other battles before the Heroes return with the magical fleece.

This PG rated movie is for kids and takes a mythological story and makes it even more fantastic. I only enjoyed it because I haven't matured properly. However, it was not as enjoyable as the first movie, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. It could be the usual impact of a first time story as opposed to subsequent repeating of more fantastic scenes and battles.

This movie also seemed to have more messages for kids about acceptance of differences, trust and family. Maybe more adults should pay attention to those messages.
