yeah certain patterns may only become evident in certain time-scales, or even in certain sensory modalities. Keep in mind that our perception of the world is the only available thing to compare anything else with; we have only psychological projection. (aka you're not hearing crickets being intelligent singers, you're hearing crickets' chirps slowed down and it happens to sound like singing)

Somewhere in the world Mr. Cricket is listening to a sped-up recording of a human choir that sounds like crickets chirping, and he's thinking the same thing.

    crickets are yummy..

    poem/song I wrote, has a cricket in it.. :)

    looking out another window
like I did the same yesterday
    Its just the same evening
in another morning waiting for you

Im still waiting for the direction to find me
I know the sun is shining
behind the clouds that hide those rays
I suppose its holding onto a box of rain

When Im falling down in a doorway not familiar
I close my eye and make a new picture
box of rain hasnt eased my pain just yet

When the alarm goes off before Im done dreaming
I shade my eyes while waking, trying to start my day
I know the box of rain is on its way
but the wax on the candle is getting low

    The moth on the windowsill
Hes got his hankechief ready for me
    Singing in a whisper -singing
"please dont cry, Im afraid like you
waiting for a box of rain,
if I was strong enough, Id carry you over the clouds of smoke when your candle goes out, waiting for a box of rain with you"

I laid my head on the floor and closed my eyes
When a cricket came in said
"what are you worrying for, stop wasting energy waiting for a box of rain,
Ive got the weather report its on its way,
get up on your feet and sing with me
While waiting for a box of rain"

I opened the freezer door the only clean air to breath
sat down in my chair and rolled up my sleeves
When I struck the first note
I felt the quake shaking the room
Cracking the ceiling open and a bird flew in,
Flapping his wings trying to dry off

    Singing in a whistle
"look outside the storm is coming
its the box of rain youve been waiting for"
and he sang with us and it started to rain

before I knew it the roof was breaking loose
and the rain was pouring in
I took off my hard shoes and put my flippers on
and the bird and the cricket were singing with me

The water got so high it blew the circuits out
put down my electric guitar and let it float away
picked up my acoustic and played a different song
    just for you
I know the flood will help you find me
but I dont know how long youll remain a drift

The water got so high the walls began to fall
the bird and the cricket got on the boards I was floating on in the rain.

we were floating in the rivers made by the storm
when the bird flew off to look ahead
came back with blade of grass in his beak
singing in a whistle" there's a panda on a bamboo raft
playing a flute all alone in ther rain..

We could hear her notes ripple off the water
they went along with our song
Gave a note to the bird just to give her
saying "toss out your anchor and we'll find you in the sea"

That little panda wasnt that far away
running out of strenght rowing from china
she was playing strong enough for us to hear her
but she held her notes in tune, though the tears she was crying made the water deeper

That old moth was hiding behind my ear
he flw off to the panda in the storm
    gave her his hankerchief
    and sang in a whisper
"dont you cry, dry your eye and join our band in the rain"

When I saw the panda there was a rainbow reflecting in her eyes
When I turned around to see it, it was gone
The moth flew over to me and sang in a whisper
"you can only see the rainbow together"

I put my guitar in the water and rowed to her
I got on her raft and we looked in the same direction
We saw the rainbow the moth spoke of

And the rain stopped coming down
The level of the water was receeding
we saw some land showing above
The bird flew off to see if it was safe

He came back with a little book
The book was filled with songs
the title was "live here forever and in peace"

Aye, the singing is novel... it's more the fact that they're harmonising :0

    Some cool shit right there

Orison: I like the moth :)

thanks.. the moth is cute. I wrote that after a chloroform binge in an old house with leaky roof. truth is, I sprayed a cricket on the floor with chloroform and in my trip he turned into this Giant Darth Cricket figure and beat me up with light saber and I hid under the table.. when I come too, there was a moth flying around my oil lamp and I blew it out.. I opened the freezer door cause the chemical smell wasnt in there.. the amount of rain that came in made the carpet soaked. I remember a water stain on the wall, looked like Jerry Garcia.. there are pandas in my china closet..

That was really interesting to listen to.

I wonder what a cricket sounds like to another cricket. Perhaps they naturally hear what we just did.

I like crickets just the way they sound (outside), puts me right to sleep. :)

Indoor crickets are too loud and are shown the door. :bobby:

I frequently hear heavenly harmonies coming from ordinary sounds when I myself am very still.

The comment by Andreas near the end of the comments section in the above posted article describes how he thinks the recording was made. He posted an mp3.

    "Andreas November 29, 2013

This is a wonderful piece of music that has blown my mind!

But as many others i was curious if it was described correctly. Finding out is quite easy:

If the piece, as advertised by the narrator, consists of the original crickets and the same recording sped down to human speed, without effects or manipulation, all you have to do is speed the piece itself up and down to find out. Why involve other crickets??

I did just that, i sped the piece first down and then up. I tried to find a good pitch to get as close to the desired result as possible.

    https://www.dropbox.com/s/sypxoyh4f4bq8o9/crickets%20pitched.mp3

As you can hear the sped down version is the beautiful choir but much darker in the background. In the foreground are the original crickets and some occasional birds, sped down to human pitch but sounding nothing like the celestial choir sequence in the piece… however one can imagine that their repeating of three tones could be used to create human like sequences of harmonies.

The sped up version contains a lot of high pitched noise on top (original crickets + birds) but also the celestial choirlike sequence sped up to cricket speed. This is the most interesting part: you can hear it sounds like crickets but still it’s easy to hear those humanlike melodies… which crickets in real life simply don’t do. They are more minimalistic than that [IMG]

I think it’s pretty evident that what “Audio Guy” wrote here above is very close to the truth. It’s more like the composer discovered that the crickets play a few notes repeatedly that are on a scale that, when sped down, sounds pretty much like a human singing. But the magic of perfect harmonies and angelic chords could only have been created by a human. Whether by sampling or fading in and out different tapes at the right moments… doesn’t really matter.

Bottom line is i wish someone had played this to me in 1992 when i didn’t have the technology to find out. It would have been a beautiful lie to believe in. The internet is killing our collective innocence and imagination… slowly [IMG]

Still gonna give this recording to my parents on christmas eve though [IMG] and they will never know the truth!"
