went to a church dinner last night (wasen't expecting much so i ate beforehand)
all they had were ribs, burgers, hotdogs etc. you get the idea
this older guy who was cooking the food said to me that me not eating his food is an insult to him and i said i'm sorry but i'm a vegetarian, he then said to me if i knew i would have cooked some fish, GRRRRRRR! why do people always think we eat fish? i told him vegetarians don't eat fish and his reply was yes they doyou need atleast fish to eat, so i said well i don't eat fish and he said "you don't even eat fish, that's so stupid" then he went on a rant about i dont even know what and said "please don't tell me that your one of those vegans (i am), so i said yes i am and he procided to tell me that i must have an eating disorder, at this point i was starting to get annoyed and didn;t want to talk about this but he wouldent let up. then he asked me what's the point and i said look it's a personal thing, his reply was "so your diabetic then?" (!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!)
he finally shut up but kept coming over to me with a plates of ribs and kept saying "i'm sorry you don;'t know what your missing" and kept making stupid noises
then there was cake and the same guy goes to pass it out and he goes like to hand it to me and says "whoops, no cake for the diabetic here" in a mocking kind of way

WHY DO PEOPLE HAVE TO BE SO IGNORANT!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
i'd expect more from a religious person like that. i just don't get it

perhaps because according to many parts of the Bible(both old and new test) fish arent considered animals.

In kosher beliefs...fish are the only animal exempt from the laws surrounding the food.Like no dairy mixed with meat...except for fish.you can mix dairy with fish.

people often akin fish to insects..because their nervous systems are just as primitive.

and insects are not considered to be "meat".

for example...an herbivorous species like an Orangutan...eats insects.they eat ants, termites, beetles(for the protein because they cant grow and harvest soy beans)..but are still considered herbivorous rather then omnivorous by biological standards.(as in classified as herbivores)

I view fish as meat...they are meaty.you eat their flesh.if you eat fish you are a pescatarian not a vegetarian.

I guess the next time you go to a church function...bring your boca burgers because you cant depend on others to provide for every individual's dietary needs.

I guess it would have been low to say "i don't eat fish because that is a symbol of Jesus."

Still, I wonder what his response would have been. Those folks deserve the battery-caged hen lectures.

But yep, Otter's right. two site designs ago I had a LONG post explaining all that milk-flesh-fish bit. I'll spare you, but the upshot was meat was considered land creatures. Kosher allows chicken and cheese, for example, since birds are "of the air."

Side note: kosher does not necessarily mean no pork. I recently discovered that some rabbis allow geletain from pig skin.
    blech.

    where's my agar?

Wow that's pretty bad! I've never understood why omnis get so offended when people don't eat the same way that they do... and I've never understood why if you tell them that you're veggi they'll try to analyze you as if they're nutritional consultants. I'm amazed at how well you seem to have handled it, if that was me I would have taken names :p

And why is it that when you get invited to dinner or B-B-Q some where, and ask "whats for dinner" the answer is " we're having chicken or pork ribs or hot dogs" well I guess thats all because they never mention anything else.
For a holiday meal, everyone sits and waits for the Turkey or ham to be served. Even if they are starving because I assume it's the best and worth the wait, while the roasted corn gets cold and the salad wilts and the homemade bread dries out.
Remember when mother told us to eat our veggies cuz they are good for us?
But now mother will complain if we don't try her new meatloaf recipe.

my dad always tries to get me to fish with him, and i refuse, and he tells me that they can't feel any pain, it's not hurting them when they die, meanwhile he proceeds to pour them into a pan of freezing icecold water while they suffer, then he guts them and eats them. so what if they can't feel our kind of physical pain, maybe they have their own kind of pain and even if they don't, we're still taking their lives! the fish didnt do anything to us! (except maybe nibble on our toes :p )

When I was young I heard my dad say a few different things about food.He would tell us that if you eat junk, then you become junk. He loved gardening and for years I remember him growing blue potatoes, spaghetti squash, tons of carrots, corn, zucchini, lima beans, cabbage, spinach and bell peppers (all 3 colors), in a field with lots of wild berries and apple trees around. Dad may of had a couple quirks also about food, like not wanting my brother to have artificial colors & flavoring because dad said it made him hyper and angry. Dad always kept ginger ale, cranberry juice, and prune juice in the frig to cure whatever ailed ya.
Now my mother had a thing about making us eat liver because we needed the iron. Well she cooked it till it became shoe leather and tasted gross. I brought home some article about organ meats being high in cholesterol and showed my dad. Because I was born with a heart defect, they decided I didn't need to eat something with lots of cholesterol. Mom was still concerned about getting the iron, so whenever she had liver I got to eat spinach & rasins.

    What?
    Next time give him this:

    *starts lpreaching*
    Dan 1:8-17

8 But Daniel made up his mind not to defile himself by eating the food and wine given to them by the king. He asked the chief official for permission to eat other things instead. 9 Now God had given the chief official great respect for Daniel. 10 But he was alarmed by Daniel's suggestion. "My lord the king has ordered that you eat this food and wine," he said. "If you become pale and thin compared to the other youths your age, I am afraid the king will have me beheaded for neglecting my duties."

11 Daniel talked it over with the attendant who had been appointed by the chief official to look after Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. 12 "Test us for ten days on a diet of vegetables and water," Daniel said. 13 "At the end of the ten days, see how we look compared to the other young men who are eating the king's rich food. Then you can decide whether or not to let us continue eating our diet." 14 So the attendant agreed to Daniel's suggestion and tested them for ten days.

15 At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his three friends looked healthier and better nourished than the young men who had been eating the food assigned by the king.
16 So after that, the attendant fed them only vegetables instead of the rich foods and wines. 17 God gave these four young men an unusual aptitude for learning the literature and science of the time. And God gave Daniel special ability in understanding the meanings of visions and dreams.
    NLT

Yes, they were really stupid. Really, I mean, look! They all looked healthier, and obayed The Lord. How stupid is that?

    Get saved.

    Rom 14:21
Don't eat meat or drink wine or do anything else if it might cause another Christian to stumble.
    NLT

Yes, he certainly obayed this.

    Rom 14:1-3
3 Let not him who eats despise him who does not eat, and let not him who does not eat judge him who eats; for God has received him.
    NKJV

    Bull's eye.

    That too.

    Wow.
I hate that too.... I understand that in some religions they don't consider fish a meat, but whether that is your religion or not, how can people NOT understand that a vegetarian considers anything that was once ALIVE meat? I don't know how you can't consider fish an animal... I really don't *grasp* that.
    It bothers me too...
My friend Danielle asked me one day if I was still a vegetarian, and I said, "Well actually I recently went vegan"... she didn't know what that was, and she said, "Oh is that where you don't eat fish either?"
I laughed, and just said "Danielle, vegetarians dont eat fish either... "
I didn't really try to explain because people have a hard time *understanding*
It's something they have to learn about themselves, because if you just tell them they "think you're crazy"

That's horrible the way he was mocking you... you would *think* at a church get together people would be more respectful and caring of others. I guess I was fooled, huh?

People also have a hard time understanding the reasons for going vegan... To someone like that, I just wouldn't have even explained. When he asked why I wasn't eating the meat I would have said the same, and after the fish statement, I would have just walked away. I refuse to get in arguments over this with people who don't understand it, because it's rather pointless. Unless they are actually willing to hear about what it entails [but a lot of people ARENT that open minded]

Good for you for keeping strong though. A lot of people CANT handle the criticism and that's why their veg diets don't last... I think it's truly beautiful when you can get past all of that, and stand up for what you truly believe. Kudos to you, my friend!

I'm always amused when people comment that being veg. is 'unhealthy', yet they approve of people eating mainly meat and potatoes, and very few vegetables and fruits. Sometimes I feel like yelling but look at him *points at obese man eating a hamburger* Are you telling me that that's healthy???

Alot of people consider vegetarianism unamerican. In their minds "american" = baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and chevrolet..

and, sorry to say, alot of christians consider christianity and the "american way of life" inseperable ideologies.

People like that have a tendancy to jump to conclusions; ie, "you don't eat meat therefore you must be a liberal, therefore you're probably in favor of abortion, gay marraige, welfare, and alot of other "Unamerican" "Anti-christian" heresay".

Loki, that is a disrespectul comment to the women on the forum.
Please refrain from similar in the future.
The non sexist "boil on the ass end of a pig" is much more appropriate.
The guy was a jerk and one wonders if he thinks of himself as a good Xtian.
But, what can one expect form a doctrine with mock cannabalism?
