Do you guys do any forms of activism? in my school i used to put up posters with thoughts, quotes, or sayings. im working on a banner to put up with as many signatures as possible promoting peace, ive started a movement which im planning to really take off after i hold the first teach-in when the weather gets warms. those are some of the more serious things that i do to promote peace and well being, aside from just normal good-natured deeds. do you guys do any forms of activism for whatever your passion is? and if so please say what, maybe we could share some good effective ideas.
I'm not a whole lot into actually "protesting", but I do spread a lot of peace among friends and things. When I get politically pissed off, I'll write a letter to the newspaper editor, not that I read the paper, so if it's getting printed or not I have no clue.
I pass out pro marijuana flyers and anti-militarism flyers around my school, and also post flyers and posters beside military recruiting posters. I also hide the cards that they leave outside the office and am usually there to provide counter points when a recruiter visits.
hey man, thats a good idea, i get a lot of those cats around my so called "education" building. could you PM me with some of your points against militarism, im interested. or just reply, either or brother. much love and power to you, and to you all
I'm in a group at my school called Peer Leadership. It's a group of people who had to go through a rigorous application/interview process to be selected, then were trained through the Anti-Defamation League's World of Difference program. We go to other classrooms in our school (and even other schools, if need be) to run anti-discrimination, anti-hate workshops and to educate people about the harm that stereotypes, prejudice, and violence can do. We did this for hundreds of kids at Youth Congress in Boston, too. My favorite Peer Leadership activity, however, was when we went to a convention (sort of?) called Empower Peace.. You may have heard of it.. in which we had an international teleconference with other high school students from Pakistan and Egypt. During the conference, we talked about how we're really not all that different (to say it very very generally). It was aired on news stations in 133 countries and had millions of viewers.. so I'd say that was a pretty good scale for spreading the message of peace and equality. Others who have already replied: Keep up the good work! The world needs people to spread the peace and the love...
Outside of putting stickers over everything and wearing peace symbol necklaces and patches. I myself can tend to be a walking political billboard, but I have been wanting to try to find out other ways to spread peace. Some things I have considered is going to the park on a sunny day and just bringing my acoustic guitar and singing protest songs and passing out differant form of literature about peace. Those are some awesome ideas you have though knottybaja! I would so do those if I went to school! Does anyone have any suggestions for someone who doesn't go to school on how to protest and spread peace beyond just being cool to others? Does the whole singing protest songs in the park idea sound like a decent one? (Songs like Masters of War, Where have all the flowers gone, blowing in the wind, that sorta thing.) I have thought often about activism but don't really know how to get involved. I am not surrounded by any/many like-minded people, nor do I live in a big enough town to organize an effective public protest like picketing.
I've been to a fair amount of protests, spent time with marching with striking union workers, working election campaigns, been to one RTS party.
I feel kind of sad/guilty that i dont feel a burning passion about anything to go to the leangths of handing out leaflets or putting up posters. well after uni i am planning on going on vso www.vso.org.uk for a year or so, because i strongly believe in an 'equal' world and i think thats a start, but theres nothing i can really do to help the local area. HElp
Tomorrow I am hopefully going to counter-protest the www.godhatesfags.com group. They are headed to the state capitol (up the street) Im hopefully gunna check out and show these people some real love, and messages of tolerance, not hate.
I have those military guys come in my school all the time. They sit in my cafateria with flyers and stickers and bags and shirts trying to get people to sign up with them. I think its rediculous. I mean going into a high school where these kids are basically open to anything right now, especially freshman,(who are trying to change themselves, make a name for themselves.) they are vulnerable to new ideas that could later on hurt them. They think the army would be cool, a good thing to get into after high school. Ive always wanted to go up to the military guys and just flip their table over and tell them to get out of my school and that they are ruining the minds of the youth. but i cant get into trouble this semester haha. if anyone has ideas about what to say or do the next time they come, please tell em to me. im open for anything haha. I dont even know if what i said made much sense. peace~
We need victory before peace. Unless you find having to face Mecca daily and pray to Allah acceptable.
Huh? Who said anything about wanting to make you muslim? This war is not a religous war, ESPECIALLY the one in Iraq. The war in Iraq was (supposedly) about the WMDs, or more accurately a war of conquest to the American empire and oil. It has nothing to do with muslims. As far as the war in Afghanistan, first of all Osama Bin-Laden doens't represent the majority or the Muslim faith. Most muslims are not radical terrorist, just enough in al quida (sp) to, with a little help form the media and the government who controls said media, make americans afraid of EVERY muslim and view them as a possible terrorist, or someone who wants to impose their religeous beliefs on us. And what is this "victory" you speak of? Wake up man, there is no victory! Open your eyes! Wars never end, they just subside until it can manifest itself into another form! Nobody WINS a war, everyone loses, except for the fascist pig leaders who START the wars! They get exactly what they want: fear mongering and power. Everyone else gets to die, or have someone close to them die.
I had a real evil idea of something to do with those godhatesfags folks. They were in WV a couple weeks ago. I figured someone ought to trash their vehicles, take all their clothes, and drop them off at the local gay/lesbian campground to beg for help... We have an annual peace and music festival on our farm, in an attempt to turn on the local redneck wahoos to a much better thing.... I think it works, sort of... At least SOME of them have grown accustomed to hugs..................................................
Oh, yea, I remember. I wish that a large group of hippys would crash the godhates fags church some sunday. After all, they SAY they're a church, which means their open to the public, right? So what if a huge bunch of peace luvin' brothers and sisters of ALL sexual persuasions were to show up for services, like say, EVERY Sunday? Just smother the place with brotherly love? Come on all you Kansas hippys, You can do it!!!
Thanks. Did I mistake your first post as being serious when it was intended to be fecicious(sp)? Or was that there sarcasm? Sorry if you were joking... Hahaha.
