ok i have a question about sewing patterns......... how the heck am i supposed to use them????? do i cut the actual pattern out or do i lay the pattern over the cloth and somehow trace it onto the cloth. i just dont know hot to use them......... if you could please explain to me how patterns are supposed to be used i would be so grateful. thank you
if it's something I want to make more than one of, I will lay the tissue paper pattern on top of heavier paper (newspaper usually) and cut through both layers, then use the copy instead of the original. if it's my own pattern, I'll use cardboard like from a cereal box or poster board for durability. But yes, you should cut the pattern out first, at least roughly. I lay the pattern on top of the fabric, pin it in place (or lay heavy books on top, depends on what it is), and then cut everything together. I leave the pattern pinned to the fabric until I am ready to sew it, just in case I forget which side is top or what piece is what.
-After you decide what item or "view" you are making, check the pattern directions for what pieces you need. -Then cut those out of the big sheet of tissue paper, in the size you need. -Pin them to your fabric, the directions tell you how to fit them all on there, and cut each one out. -transfer any markings, like dots or darts to your fabric. -follow your directions and sew those puppies together!
there some sort of fabric/paper out there that you can use to transfer the pattern onto so you dont have to cut up the tissue paper-but the name escapes me if you go into jo-annes and ask them they might know what im talking about. but my advice is to NEVER cut out the original pattern-there are way too many pieces to lose! im saying this from experience ~_~
You can use newspaper for pattern pieces that aren't too big. Or brown paper on a roll. It is much sturdier than tissue and the pieces will last longer. I always cut my pieces apart. I can't handle the giant sheets of tissue.
I just pin it down and cut it as soon as I can, and then I fold the pieces back up on their fold lines and put it back in the envelope. I don't remember what each piece was but the patterns always have pictures so I just look for what looks the same. lol. In Home Ec, the teacher used to have the patterns on regular, thicker paper. She had blank tissue paper (the same brown kind) that we traced the thicker paper onto and then we cut that with our fabric.
