Hey all! newbie here...just wanted to say it's good to see so many sewing hippies in one place! I've been making patchwork backpacks and hats for a few years and get all my material from thrift stores. I use cotton corduroy and cotton velveteen. Most clothes have a fiber content label so you know what you're getting (not synthetic), have extra goodies that can be used, like buttons, zippers, flaps and pockets, you get an odd variety of fabric that can't be found in most high priced fabric stores...and you can get alot of different colors and textures for very little cost..especially on half price day! The coolest part though ...I think things become infused or imprinted with life energy from use (and clothes are pretty personal use!) so when I'm putting together a patchwork it's like combining all these energies to form a new thing...which, in turn will be imprinted...and so the wheel turns.
those are super cute..i started out making backbacks... I used to sew them by hand.... I love yer work! great hat!
Do you have a site? So we can see your other work. Btw, I love these backpacks...they are so awsome. Are you selling them? How much are they? Im still trying to learn sewing and I would love to make backpack like those you have here? Do have any tips on how to make theses kinds of backpacks?
well, I'm one of those hopeless right brain types that just can't follow written instructions so I started with a large bowl for inspiration and then 'imagineered' it from the inside out. It was actually alot of trial and error and now I have basic pattern pieces worked out (cut from chunks of cereal boxes) so I can duplicate it. I thought about making a pattern but was overwhelmed by the thought of trying to write down every step...I've never had any instructions to work from. I don't have a site yet.
Nice, i love them! I like the brown toned one the best! I made a bag out of pyjama bottoms and corduroys(sp?), i`ll have to post a pic of it up on here some time! Peaceeeeeee, Angela
Anybody else into making hats or backpacks? I'd be happy to share any any info that might help...also love getting new ideas!
I can make alot of things, and I'll attempt making just about anything. When I saw your backpacks though,I knew right then that I couldn't even attempt that lol. They're awesome...and they look better than professionally made products. I love how you put such detail into them. I don't know how you do it but you do it well
