Hi all - bumped into this forum whilst surfing, and it's an absolute godsend!! I started my dreads a few months ago - afraid I went down the backcombing and wax route. I felt I didn't really have a choice, as I'm a High School Teacher, and my head is really uptight, so I needed 'em looking semi-neat from the off (this being said, I haven't done 'em all uniform, as I'm not fond of 'neat' dreads - I want some unique crazy numbers on the go!). Completely giving the wax a miss now they're matting up well - and I've found that the wax has all melted away when washing with hot water. Anywayz, my main concern is that, since I started my dreads, I've been seeing quite a few caucasian dreadies like myself around town - and an alarming number of 'em seem to have either 'lost' their dreads on/around their forehead, or they're going very thin there. I've also seen some who haven't dreaded their front - perhaps to avoid this. Is this a common occurence? I'm getting all para, 'cos when I keep messing and inspecting my dreads, it seems like hair could break away at the base quite easily. I s'pose this must happen naturally to a degree, but would the dread eventually become real thin, and then possibly break - or would new hair grow onto it (with help) and reinforce the dread? Sorry to sound naive, but I'm loving my knotty numbers, and wanna watch 'em warp and grow for years to come!!!! Plus everytime I catch my hair on something or feel a hair snap I get all doomy. Cheers folks - any help is massively appreciated, Riffter
Most of us do have a hard time getting that baby fine hair to dread. Most of mine are still loose, but I do have a couple of skinny little dreads there.
I still have little "bangs" in the front that haven't dreaded. But they're cool. Let 'em be! Peace and love
If you do mind, just buy a crocheting needle and crochet the hair back in the locks. If it doesn't stay there put a little rubber band or bead on it to keep the hair in.
Cheers folks! Yeah, it's good to know this jive is commonplace - bit of a relief. I don't mind as such, 'cos as I said, I'm fond of straggly 'chaos' dreads. I just had to start 'em off kinda tidy, as my headteacher is the worst fickin' boss in the western world, and would've been in like flynn!! But now I've had 'em a while - and I've also become the union rep - she's off my case! She has bitched a lot, but not threatened me with any jive. Plus the kids (and their parents when I've met them at parents days etc) all love me dreads, which is nice. What I am worried about though, as mentioned previously, is the motherlovin' dreadies at the front simply breaking off. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon on caucasian dreadheads? I saw a bloke again today who'd got lovely long dreads - but just regular hair at the front. It looked like they were dreads, but no longer?? I keep having visions of my front numbers hanging on by threads!!!! :-( Am I just paranoid or is this real? I nearly asked the geyser today, but he mighta thought I was a loon, and said he just wanted a fringe or somethin' Cheers, El Riftino
Man Im a caucasian dreadhead, and most the front hair is dreaded, except some fly aways and some tiny dreads. Infact the hair that was dreaded first was the front part. The reason they dreaded so fast is because i always played with my front hair the most. I'd recommand just palm rolling ever so often, like ones in the morning and once at night for like 5 mins or so... Also i can only imagin you front dreadies falling out if your loseing your hair and the thing just falls out because the remainding hair cant hold on to your scalp anymore (ouch)...
Cheers A-Shwa, Luckily I'm not losing any hair, so hoping all will be cool. Probably the case then that the fellas I've seen with bald foreheads had a bit of male pattern baldness in the family! Yeah, I keep on with the palm rolling, which helps a great deal. I get plenty of 'frizzie attacks' and I'm often tempted to stick some wax on to tidy 'em up, but I've resisted up 'till now (used wax for first couple of weeks, but none since). Thanks again, Riffter
