Who here enjoyed this Movie as much as i did?. The main character, Ofelia is really rather remarkable, i loved the movies dark fantasy scenes..but i actually found the Reality, which is set in the Spanish Civil war, to be far more gripping, the ending had a wonderful message, even if it's pretty Brutal, infact i found the violence in this movie to be particularly haunting, it was very realistic, not the stylish crap hollywood churns out, but the realistic "i could imagine that happening to me" kind, all in all, one of the best Movies i've seen in the last Year, i highly recommend it. Word of Note: It is in Spanish with subtitles but i found this to actually Enhance the overall experience of the Movie for me.
I haven't see Pan's Labyrinth yet, but I recently saw del Toro's 2001 film, The Devil's Backbone, which is also set during the Spanish Civil War. It was quite good, so I'm looking forward to seeing this one. I've heard so many good things about it.
my friend asked me to watch the movie because she said she didn't understand the story... she's asking me to explain it to her.
y'know, it wasn't what I thought it would be. The commercials for it were a bit deceiving, I thought the film would actually be about Pan's Labyrinth, but it was more of a subtext of the film - the film really was about the Spanish war and that evil stepfather... so I went into it expecting something completely different and was a bit disappointed. But the special effects are pretty cool.
I loved it. Whilst some say it was two tales rolled into one, I think different. I feel that she created the whole fantasy thing to settle her innocent and naive mind. To stop the horror surrounding her from sinking in. A guy gets his face smashed in with a bottle... over and over again. You see his nose break again and again and his face warp inwards.
I was really excited about it when it was theatrically released. Only one theatre picked it up here, and I never made it there to see it. I did buy the dvd last week, but haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
Ah, i was beginning to think this thread would die without a post, glad to see some of you enjoyed it, those of you who have yet to watch it or have just recently watched it feel free to post back your thoughts, i didn't share most of mine yet as hate posting Spoilers. See how many "Trinity's" you can spot in the Movie, there are an amazing amount of them.
As soon as I saw the trailers I couldn't wait for it to be released. I wasn't disapointed either, one of the best films I've seen.
I loved it. Liked it a lot better the 2nd time I watched it, though. The 1st time, I watched it with my husband, and he hates subtitles. Absolutely refuses to read them. So it was nearly 2 hours of "what did he say?" & "what did she just say?". AAAARRRGH!!! But, anyway, I thought it was an amazing movie. Dark but beautiful.
I have to admit that I was a little disappointed with the film, but only because it had so much potential. The director is more creative and fearless than most, but I don't think he created the amazing film that he could have. The two worlds/realities in the story could have intertwined in a much more creative and substantial way. It almost felt to me as though the fantasy parts might have been an after-thought, stuck in here and there where necessary. I don't think the girl's personal story was developed enough, which left me feeling like the Captain was the main character when it should have been Ofelia. It's ranked the 41st best film ever on IMDb right now. While I don't think it quite deserves that, it's still quite a bit better than most films, and I'd recommend it.
