This is a limited release movie, done in the Spanish Language.
My Princess says that the spoken Spanish was beautiful.

Labryinth had sub-titles and was easy for an Anglo to understand.

    The story line switches back and forth between heavy, nasty reality;
and the farytale-flights of fancy of the young girl who is the protaganist and star of the flick.

The Girl is a big reader of childrens fairytale books, theese books help to fuel her imaginary escapes from the unpleasantness of Post-civil War Spain in 1944; a time when WWII was raging and partisans of the Liberal Spanish factions remained in some areas fighting the faccists of Gen. Franco in the hopes that The Allies would intervene in Spain after they beat Nazi Germany. The Girl has somehow lost her Father in the Civil War, her Mom has a new beau, a hard-line Faccist military officer.

Her Mom is also suffering through a difficult pregnancy with her new beau's baby. As the film opens, Mother and Daughter are journeying to visit the beau
at his military camp in the mountains. There He fights partisans of the defeated liberal goverment of the 30's.

This is no Disneyfied fairy tale. The aincent indo-european demi-god Faunus
(Pan ) can appear frightening in his visits with The Girl. The tasks he lays on to her are also spooky.

Here the fary tale sequences seem more real than the reality. Which features violent, over the top antics from The Military Beau. The Military is being pressured at thier camp by gurellias inspired by D-Day, and there is an informer in the camp leaking them information. The Pregnancy is difficult and the dreams are becoming more demanding.

    Go see this movie.

Just watched it last night, it was great. Had more violence then I expected, so it's not a kiddy movie, but I loved it.

It scared the hell out of me! I was suprised it was so graphically violent. But I liked it alot, it was really magikal and had such a great storyline and everything. Beautiful movie all in all. Although I can go the rest of my life without having to see scary ass baby killing monsters eat anymore faeries.

I was fully enthralled in it from start to finish. I enjoyed the way they the adults scolded the children for still having fantasy and belief in magic while portraying the adults "more grounded" lives centered around waging wars with eachother. The magical fantasy element never dominated the film and always felt somehow organic if that makes any sense. While a movie like Harry Potter gives you Hollywood Magic, Pan gave you fantasy elements firmly grounded in reality. The only negative I felt was that the ending was a tad bit hoaky and abrupt to say the least. I was really hoping for another 45 minutes of interesting plot and then I get this sense that the movie is just gonna end in the next 5 minutes and it does :(

all and all i'm very glad i saw this film and recommend it.

Brilliant. One of the best movies of 2006 in any language. Hollywood needs to take a lesson from the fact that Independants and filmmakers in other nations are still making great film while the big budget movie machine keeps turning out total crap.

I thought it was an extremely well-done movie. I loved the little faeries with the leaf wings and all the other great characters!

I wish it would have been longer though...I feel like some of the plot was rushed. But I ADORED it!

If you remember, she had gone to bed without dinner. She was really hungry, and it was a beautiful spread.

I loved this movie, and I want to see it again. And again. I was thinking it would be alot more mellow than it was, and was not expecting all of the violence, but it was most definitely the best version of a fairy tale ever to be made for the screen.

We saw it last night. A little more gore than I expected but I truly loved it. And it brought back a lot of my Spanish, and it was done in what I suppose we would call the higher form of the language.

Argh. I remember that I LOVED it, but I got just barely stoned enough to forget most of it. I have to see it again, but that's hardly a bad thing.

A mystical creature puts you out on some crazy quest, and tells you to NOT EAT ANYTHING YOU SEE AT THE FUCKING TABLE, and you go into this room where theres a table with lots of food, you see a really scary, ugly creature sitting at the head of the table. All over the room are pictures of this creature killing kids, your fairy guides are grabbing you and screaming 'no'. Youre not poor, you have money, you have food at home, which is 10 minutes away, how delicious does that grape seem? Guilermo Del Toro seemed to break away from lots of stupid/silly fairy tale motifs, but he slipped up there.

yeah you can take a valium and chill. all this matter takes is a different perspective to pan out. besides the fact that she was starving, eating the grapes was the first act of defiance against full obedience to the fawn. the second time is more obvious and i don't want to spoil it. so eating the grapes and the second act of defiance illustrate the importance of questioning authority. this theme is displayed in the subplot as well. "Franco's Spain" is the new authority and they are being questioned by the rebel freedom fighters.

    Regards

I liked it but I think it was over hyped.

The faun and the creature sitting at the dining table was very well done. I was expecting more fantasy and special effects gaged on the trailer. The young girl that starred in the movie carried out a fantastic performance!

It was GREAT, my FAVORITE MOVIE EVER, then again, I was baked out of my mind when I saw it, but I THINK it had really good acting, great special effects, and an awesome story line, then again, maybe I need to see it again when I'm not really high

I enjoyed it quite a bit but do agree that it is overhyped. I have seen better movies and was a bit disappointed in it at times but I felt it was well done. Perhaps I should have seen it stoned but read that it scared people and was dark so I kept away from that, oh well, next time I will go on instinct opposed to trying to avoid the fear factor
